RG3120 VS S5470 any feelings?

Hello Everyone:

I'm new on here so go easy on me lol!!!

Anyways just got back into playing after well a tad layoff lets say and I'm wanting to treat myself to a new guitar. I had my heart set on the S5470 but after so many threads on sustain issues I'm now leaning towards a RG3120. Any feelings on why one is better or not between the two?

I currently play a Yamaha Pasifica 1221 MS and LOVE it, I'm sure someone will knock it but it's a dream to play to me. My other love is my ART 300.

The music I play is like most I guess on here metal.

Anyways any feed back will be appreciated

Re: RG3120 VS S5470 any feelings?

To me my 3120 is like a Gibson LP on "shred" steroids its as heavy as a LP but you get the extra frets, trem. etc... with a big sound and I've been playing mine for around 15 years.

I like the S series too but when compared they feel (not tonally) weak somehow. I know there are crazy shredders out there using the S series but when shredding with one I can't feel that challenge joy with them. To make it short I like playing the S series but not shredding

But of course go out and play both as much as you can to make youown idea about them

Re: RG3120 VS S5470 any feelings?

S series for the win....nicer body, best neck and mahogany.
The sustain issues are negligible on the current crop but it is noticeable slightly on one string. This is only due to the zr trem they currently use.

2014 sees the zr trem deleted and edge lo pro returns on jap S series, minor problem solved....best ibanez trem ever returns.

Re: RG3120 VS S5470 any feelings?

Thanks everyone. . . I think my mind is made up and I'm going to get the 3120. Did some more research on Youtube and I'm finding the sound is just better on the 3120 over the 5470. I'm selling some stuff so once that is sold, hopefully this weekend then I can respond to an add that has the 2002 RG3120TW. So life is looking up.

I was also looking at a Jackson Soloist SL1 made in the USA any feelings on that or am I upsetting the Ibanez gods by talking about another brand lol. I think this guitar as well and the feel is equal to the RG and the one I"m looking at has a smoken ghost flame paint job.

Thanks again for the input as like I said I have been out of the loop for a few years but it feels good to be back.

The SL1 is an incredibly well built guitar, but it has very little in common with an RG3120. You really need to know what you want/need in a guitar before deciding between the two.

Yeah I know that's the golden rule lol and thus I must stay focused on the RG3120 the sound is exactly what I'm looking for and not just the look.

As I said I mostly play Metallica even at this age lol but the sound I love is more warm like the 3120 as to the ball busting SL1 . . eh who knows maybe I'll buy both lol.

Only issue is the RG3120 has a few battle nicks but nothing major and the SL1 is mint and both are about the same price . . and so my confusion continues . . I could ask for the SL1 as an early wedding gift as I'm due to tie the knot this September

Either the price on the 3120 is too high, or the SL1 is too low........

If you found a minty USA SL1 graphic in the $1k ballpark....DON'T pass it up!!!!!

Re: RG3120 VS S5470 any feelings?

Well the TW RG3120 is $850 and I think the SL1 was originally listed at $1000 but now he wants to trade in his add so I'm waiting to see what his price is. I can get a Red RG for $650 but I really don't like the color red at all sooooo I sadly have to pass. But yes I just found out how much the SL1 goes for so now I'm back to leaning more towards the SL1. . . somehow I think I need a load to solve this issue hahahaha

BTW prices listed are in Canadian

Question if you have time. With respect to the Jackson. The guy swapped out the pick ups for the SD live wire the Dave Mustsang ones. They any good?

On a side note and this is just a preference thing. Not a fan of the micro dots on the 3120 but I guess I can get used to that

The Live wires are hot.... very hot. If you want to play Metallica with it, you'll love the whole package. The Livewires have a great tone that's a little warmer and "meatier" than EMG 81/85's.

If you want it to be a little more versatile, I'd go back to the JB and classic stacks....... They're a killer pup combo.

Well like I said it really is a toss up as to the one I'll get once I have the money, hopefully this Sunday.

Question: This one add I'm responding to said the RG3120 didn't come with a truss rod cover from the factory is this correct or is he trying to pull one over on the buyer? Not that its a huge deal

True story. No truss rod cover on the 3120.

Bud you have been a huge help so TY! it is just hard to tell from some of the pics I found . . Tell you, I should have never set my axe down or left the guitar seen way to much stuff to catch up on . . however its been a fast learning curve

Further update . . the price for the red 3120 is so tempting I think I'll just lean to live with the red and close that deal on the weekend if all goes well . . shhhh its only $650 and I feel that is a great price
