RG321 upgrade or new guitar

I bought a RG321 a few years back when I decided to learn how to play. I'm looking to move up and can't decide on new / better model or just an upgrade on the pups. Guitar is in good shape.

Ideas?

Re: RG321 upgrade or new guitar

I play my 321 more than any of my more expensive Ibanez's. It's the underdog of the range, in my opinion, and definitely worth throwing some decent pickups in.

Re: RG321 upgrade or new guitar

I have a 421 that I play a bunch - same features.

I've got a Pearly Gates in the neck and a JB in the bridge and it's tuned a half-step down, which I think really suit it, and having the bridge be fixed has actually been an aid in further vibrato development for me.

If you're not hankering for a floating trem, a pickup swap may be what the doctor ordered.

Just putting it out there that Ihsahn's main recording 6-String is a 321MH. But...Ibanez probably doesn't want you to know that!

Do you like everything else about the guitar or not. If you do, then replace the pups.

New tuners and pickups are all that guitar needs. RG321 is extremely underrated.

Re: RG321 upgrade or new guitar

I love the way the guitar feels and I prefer a fixed bridge. I mostly like to play classic rock with some slides towards the heavier side. I know a guy who upgraded his to Seymour Duncan's an Grover tuners. I don't know what kind but he loves it.

Re: RG321 upgrade or new guitar

I have a mine set up with an Iron gear Steam hammer at the bridge, an Entwistle single coil at the neck, custom pickguard that came off of an old RG1200es, Graphtech Tusq nut and Planet Waves locking tuners. It sounds amazing, plus it never goes out of tune. Only thing I'm going to change is put a single-sized humbucker at the neck as the volume balance between the bridge and neck isn't too good.

Re: RG321 upgrade or new guitar

Any suggestions on the pups? And is it worth it to go with the Grover's (locking or not)?

Re: RG321 upgrade or new guitar

I'd go for Planet Waves locking tuners. Really great tuners and cost a wee big less then most of the others.

As for pickups, I'd put in a D-Activator combo. They're a bit brighter and will balance out the darkness of the mahogany a bit. And they're REALLY versatile. They do everything from Jazz to Death Metal!
