Re: Rg470?

A 1994 RG470 will most probably be a Korean made one with a crappy LO-TRSII trem. If you get it cheap and replace the trem with a Gotoh or original Floyd Rose trem and change the pickups you could have a nice guitar.

Probably keep an eye out for a decent used 570 and upwards if you don't want to have to change too much with your guitar.

Re: Rg470?

^ +1.

the japanese rg470's are awesome- but it has that crappy trem (bar a very odd model). Mine is a 2000 model by the way, and it's MIJ.

the other thing to remember is, if it IS a japanese model (with lo-trs, not lo-trs II), you need to drill the holes for the trem a little bigger. On mine, they're about 8mm stock, while the Gotoh studs of the trem I bought are about 11mm. I think the OFR studs are a similar size to the Gotoh ones.

Oh, and you'd need a pickup change too, but the trem is the killer.

+1!

I have a '98 MIK470. TRS was REALLY crappy, so I changed it with an edge. I don't know about Gotoh or OFL, but I had to re-route in order to fit the trem.
Other than that the guitar is ok. If it's really cheap get it, otherwise I would stick with LonePhantom's suggestion about the 570.

Re: Rg470?

when i had an rg470dx...95- w/ lo-trs 2. i swapped it with an edge for the duration i had it. massive improvement, but i was stil using the lo-trs pivot posts, so it wasn't as effective as a true edge with the right posts. i didn't have to route, but that was luck of the draw. i have had to route on them before, just not that one particularly. its actually better to drop a real floyd in for the price of that and a gotoh. good guitar, great beater and the dx's aren't too bad on the eyes. i ended up swapping the maple board with a dx rosewood board...sharkteeth and fully bound. looked gorgeous.

Re: Rg470?

Ok, here's what it is:

RG470:

if you have a japanese one with LO-trs, you need to re-route for an edge or lo-pro (a lo-pro didn't fit in mine).

you DON'T need to re-route for a Gotoh or OFR, but you DO need to drill the holes for the studs/posts a little bigger.

If you have a korean 470 with lo-trs II, the edge MIGHT fit, if you're lucky. And the studs MIGHT be the correct size for the OFR and Gotoh, but I'm not certain.

Re: Rg470?

Korean one, the Gotoh trem fits exactly on the standard studs. Been there, done that!

Re: Rg470?

^k- thanks, at least I know that for certain now.

the japanese one is better manufactured, though (probably- to closer tolerances, anyway)- so if you're any good at drilling or know someone who is, the MIJ one is the way to go.

The edge doesn't fit a korean 470 (at least it didn't fit mine nor a good friend's one). You won't have to drill any holes though.

Re: Rg470?

I got an rg470fm tbl and it's a quite good guitar for the money it costs...the lo trs isn't bad it's not like the lo pro but if the strings are well streched it keeps the tune well...but if you want a comparison, it's far-far away from my 777dy! You have to consider how much money you're gonna spend

yep, that's why i said "might if you're lucky". I read on the trems section of this site that due to higher tolerances in the korean RG's, an edge can sometimes be made to fit. Obviously you didn't get lucky, unfortunately...

haha!

that's why i'm always uber-cautious when telling people to try stuff- i know if i had to try carpentry, my guitar would end up in an unusable state!
