RG470 and rg570 necks

On the catalogues, both 470 and 570 are listed as wizard I, but are they really the same neck? I'm talking about the pre-1993 MIJ necks.

Exclamation Re: RG470 and rg570 necks

Hi there,
A long time ago (in 1993) I had a RG470 and that neck was the same as the PGM10 that I had 10 years later.
And that is a wizard II neck................
The wizard I neck is more flat compared to the wizard II neck.

If it was 1993, then it sure was MIJ?

They had the same necks.
If you look at the heel stamp it'll have Rg-550 or 570 on it.

Odd.
Every other 470 I've seen had a 550 neck--my EG included.
It's also the reason you see so many ebay listings that describe them as hybrids--a 470 with 550 neck. Those people didn't know that those models shared necks.

Re: RG470 and rg570 necks

Well, this 470 has just arrived, it has the edge trem, an odd body and this neck. I just wanted to make sure that this is a wizard I. Unfortunately haven't played any 570's long enough to recall what it was like, and compare...

Re: RG470 and rg570 necks

would measuring give an exact result? I read 17 mm. at 1st fret, and there are no wizard II's that measure 17, as I recall? Would the profile still be different than a regular wizard?

Re: RG470 and rg570 necks

My 2000 MIJ RG470 is supposed to be a Wizard II neck, stamped with RG-550R#2 in a single peice

My caliper reads 18mm at first fret, honestly the necks plays real good

Re: RG470 and rg570 necks

470's are SO hard to figure out as far as parts go. Ibanez has put everything on them including the kitchen sink......LOL.

The way I figure the necks is this:

Square heel= original wizard
AANJ= WizII

except when the (square heel) neck stamp is followed by a "#2" (like timman's). the #2 denotes a wiz II. Back then, the WizI and WizII were the same necks with different radii.

Re: RG470 and rg570 necks

actually, my RG470 is a 2000 MIJ, so it has a AANJ joint. But being the same neck with a different radii makes sense. Even more when we think that in 2000, most productions for lower end models where out of japan. So Japan manufactures might have stuck with Wizard 1 profiles and changed only the fretboard for the models.

Re: RG470 and rg570 necks

That's some great info here, thanks. So, wizard I it is.

It seems Ibanez has done weird things back at the time. Maybe they still do

You're talking about the same company that put Steve Vai's blood in the paint....
