RG520QSTB question...

Hey folks! Ii just picked up an RG520QSTB for a steal, and was wondering about the quilted maple. Is it a "photoflame" top, or a real quilted maple cap? The body is banged up around the edges, and I plan on refinishing it. If it's a solid quilted maple cap, I plan on redying it transparent purple. If it's a photoflame, I'm stuck.

Thanks!

Re: RG520QSTB question...

According to the IbanezWiki, it's a quilted maple top/mahogany back

520's are a 1mm veneer.

Thanks, Rich--the exact info I was looking for! I'll have to be very careful in sanding, now...

sand the top, DO NOT use a heat gun or chemical stripper. the top is screwed if you do. i just stripped one with a heat gun and the top was toast. the back is ok to do as well as a bit of the sides, but the closer you get to the top, break out the sander. and yes, be very careful sanding the top, it is pretty darn thin. it will take a bit to get through it, but there is a layer of glue almost as thick as the veneer. if you go into it, it is very gummy. just take your time with it. btw, the clearcoat on the 520qs is very thick. as with most of the finished ibanez had during this period, was very fragile, but in this case it is very fragile and thick. lots of elbow grease going to go into stripping this one. i hope you have a palm sander...

Indeed it is. There was a guy on here who sanded his top, and did a sort of wavy line half and half on it, so it had half quilt and half plain mahogany. That was actually pretty cool, but not for everyone.

Thanks, fellas! I'm thinking of doing a 3-D transparent purple, or Dragonburst. I only use heat guns on opaque finished guitars.

i remember that one, jim! he hearkened it to the conklin melted tops and iirc, it looked pretty damn cool. mine is going to be solid mahogany sort of like the rg321, but with lots of clearcoat. it is sad that ibanez discontinued this model because imo, it was one of the best mid line guitars that they have ever released. i still have a regular rg520qstk that i have dropped an AN/TZ combo and lo-pro into. i love this thing and it keeps the miles off of my prestiges. the stripped one will end up with AN/TZ, but with an edge and be drop D tuned.

yeah, when i stripped my rt150, the heat gun was perfect! the 520 was more of a pain, but still was better than chemicals and less time than straight up sanding. i should have sanded it, though. live and learn!
