Re: RG550 1990

I've got a 90 RG550 and a 91 (serial with 92 spec) RG770DX.

They're very similar guitars, the 770 has the fancier image, and is just as playable. The only things I prefer about the 550 is that mine has an original Edge trem as opposed to the Lo-Pro on the 770, and that my 550 feels slightly more fluid to play.

I've kept the pickups from the 770 too (which are colour matched from stock) as they sound pretty damn good as generic rock pickups the ones in the 550 had to go.

Either is a great guitar. I'd not buy an RG550 for much more, or much less than 400, and an RG770DX I'd expect to pay a bit more for. (assuming both are in ok condition and given their age).

Re: RG550 1990

ok thanks for info, so would you say the original edge trem is better than the lo-pro trem?
Also would you allways reccomend trying a guitar before buying it?

thanks

I prefer the Edge over the Lo-Pro, I don't think it's necessaily "better". I do think it flutters better and has a smoother whammy action. But, the Lo-Pro seems to be a better ergonomic compromise between comfortable fixed bridge and whammy plaything, in that it doesn't get in my way at all when I'm not divebombing etc etc.

I'd alway recommend try before you buy, but sometimes that's just not practical.

Edge and Lo-Pro are as good as each other, so it only comes down to preference. My own preference is the Lo-Pro. To me, it feels exactly like an Edge but looks better.

Re: RG550 1990

If you get a chance to play an old 500 DO IT. I got a Rg 550 in salmon/pink color changing paint style, Edge trem, dimarzio in fair condition for $300/160UK. I love this guitar. I got an amazing deal IMO but if you don't need RFR or DY you could probably find one for 200.

Re: RG550 1990

You'd be lucky to get any RG550 over here for 200. Maybe one in bad condition.

Yeah, US pricing and availability and UK pricing and availability are very different animals.

I think Dee's right, for 200 either you'll need to be very lucky, or it'll be in very bad condition.

I stand by my previous statement that 400 is nearer the mark for a good condition RG500.

Re: RG550 1990

I managed to pick up an '87 RFR off evilbay a few months ago for 400 so it can be done.

It needed a bit of TLC but was generally in great nick for a 20 year old guitar.

Just need to be a bit patient and you'll find one.
