RG550 20th, is this normal?

Hi guys,

I just grabbed a RFR RG550 20th and noticed that it may be wired weirdly but wanted to check with other members.

Basically I think the tone knob is acting on the output volume. If the tone knob is all the way off then the guitar is 100% muted. Once you turn the tone knob up, the volume knob starts to work correctly.

Does this sound normal for these guitars? I have had some other older 550s, a 560 and a 570 and have a JEM which everything works as you would expect, IE volume is volume and tone is tone. I just had the PG off for cleaning and the wiring doesn't seem wonky at all, am I missing something here?

Thanks for any replies,
Alex

No, the wiring is all wrong. Do you have any wiring experience/skills?

Re: RG550 20th, is this normal?

I just popped off the PG to snap a few pics in case there is anything glaring I'm missing. Album here: http://imgur.com/a/Kat6o

All grounds are good and no loose connections. The single coil isn't marked on the back side, not sure if that's normal.

I have wired a few pickups before and can solder. Looking for a wiring diagram to try and compare.

What is your output jack wired to? It looks like it is to the volume pot. It should be to the tone pot. Unless I am not seeing the pictures correctly. Perhaps someone replaced
the output jack. Any rg550 wiring diagram will work.

Re: RG550 20th, is this normal?

Thanks for the replies guy I appreciate it.

So after hours and hours checking everything out, all the wiring looks good compared with rg550 diagrams I found online. I finally gave up and put everything back together thinking I'll deal with it another time and.......it's working fine now :/

I read in a thread about the same type of issue on another forum that a pot lug can sometimes come into contact with the control cavity shielding paint and cause issues. It's the only logical conclusion I can come to. It must have been when I placed the pickguard back in after I pulled it to clean everything. We'll see if the issue pops up again in the future.

Thanks buddy and congrats to you too. Definitely very happy with it, the color is to die for and the maple board play amazingly.

Re: RG550 20th, is this normal?

I stupidly sold my rfr several years ago. It was my main stage guitar. I still have a black one but found a deal on a rfr and couldn't say no. The reissues all were great sounding guitars. Probably because of the extra wood contact to the body. Looking forward to delivery day tomorrow.
