Have him provide the serial number behind the headstock (if he didnt sand it off) to look up the year. Neck cracks are somewhat common. check around the holes behind the nut. It does not mean its a bad deal or guitar, but you could talk him down if you can point that out. Neck pocket cracks are usually in the finish only, since there is no finish probably not an issue.. but check anyways. just take your time and go through all the switch positions and pots and make sure all the fine tuners move okay. Take it out into sunlight to see all the blemishes. plug it in.. try each fret on each string. Its pretty common for this old of a guitar to have some wear and some fret issues. so dont expect perfection. i just picked up a 93 rg550dx in excellent conditions for 250$ usd. needed new switch and pickguard.. has one tiny chip by the bridge.
