"I" would probably agree with you. 95% of the vintage strat market would disagree with us both...

Re: RG550, overrated?

I've owned all kinds of guitars from Gibson LP's, American and Japanese Strats, a BC Rich neck through, ESP's, a Ernie Ball Music Man, and various cheapies. The only guitars I've ever been completely satisfied with have been my RG550's and RG570's...They just feel right to me and sound the way I want to sound. Since I never spent more than $550 on one I'd have to say that's fairly cheap for total satisfaction and extremely underrated

One of my favorite guitars ever, I would never call it overrated. It seems to be rated perfectly.

Re: RG550, overrated?

I've owned 2 JCustoms, several Prestige models, MusicMan JP6s, MIJ Jacksons and my '87 RG550 remains the one guitar that keeps me inspired to write and play... I've contemplated selling after I acquired some high-end guitars but couldn't bring myself to it.

Re: RG550, overrated?

550 from 89' with Super2 & Paf was the best sounding guitar i have held in my hand. I had played few superior Tele's over the years, but that RG was the best. I have not had any dealings with new era RG's, but few 7 string prestiges i played for few days where not great sounding guitars.

50's American guitars are expensive wallhangers, probably great sounding guitars.

Old MIJ Rg's are incredible price/performance instruments.

Re: RG550, overrated?

RG550 is the best guitar ever made for hard rock/metal, in my opinion, I have 6 and they are all slightly different, but have that unmistakeable tone that says 550 and the maple neck is my favorite over rosewood and ebony. I never really cared to the look of the pickguard, but once I bought one, I have been hooked ever since.

Re: RG550, overrated?

In the general guitar world, any of the RG's are severely under-rated. They get their proper due here at Jemsite and a few other places but not so much beyond that.

Re: RG550, overrated?

Since this thread was resurrected, I'll throw in my 2-cents:

I would give my left [insert body part here] to have my '89 RG550 back. Best guitar I've ever owned, and my dumb ass sold it in the late 90's.

Years later (recently, actually) I found out that it was destroyed in an accident. I found the dude (who bought it) on Facebook and offered to buy it back. That's when he notified me of its demise :*(

Actually about 5 years ago the 550 was voted one of the 10 best rock guitars all time in a readers poll [Insert name of some popular guitar rag here], I think it was 6th.

Re: RG550, overrated?

i prefer the 570 to the 550 strictly because i prefer rosewood to maple...but no i don't think they're overrated...anything that gets some age is gonna show signs of use and old strats go for insane money...eventually the ibanezes probably will as well...d.m.
