RG550 project idea thread.

So I just picked up this RG550 for quite the nice price from a local. The previous owner put a small block in the trem cavity to block the trem and repainted it. It looks like the original finish must have been desert yellow by the paint that's showing through. Missing the nuts for the neck. Gonna be ordering the nuts and a trem arm from Rich.

I am thinking about stripping it and doing my own finish for it. What do you guys think would like awesome? Considering maybe a swirl, or a solid finish with a pearloid pickguard.

Re: RG550 project idea thread.

Swirls are so common--just slap a cool color on it.
Or, go the graphic route.

Re: RG550 project idea thread.

Swirls are common, but I don't have one. But I am thinking I might like a dark but bright purple with a pearloid pickguard. Does anyone know the safest way to strip the paint. It seems to be an epoxy.

Re: RG550 project idea thread.

I think he put the neck on the body while the paint was still wet. Any ideas on how to remove it without damage?

Re: RG550 project idea thread.

Just strip it down to bare wood, seal it, then refinish. Several ways to remove finish: heat gun, chemicals and sanding.

Re: RG550 project idea thread.

A burned finish would be awesome!

Sorta like the root beer but you could do a kick ass variation like a burn a sunburst pattern or something.

how about pickups?

how about the new emg x pickups add some extras like the afterburner and the phase switching.

The cream covers would look awesome with that burnt finish.

Re: RG550 project idea thread.

Really sucks someone took a 550DY and painted it black.. kind of defeats the purpose of it. Paint it a Neon color, but one that isn't on RG550's.. like Orange, Pink or just restore it to bright ass Yellow :P

Re: RG550 project idea thread.

I've taken it all apart and started sanding it down now. The yellow under this is too beat up to use... too bad. I think I will go with a sparkly blue with pearloid pickguard, if I could find the right shade of purple I'd do that too. The other thing I'm thinking is a neon green maybe.

Re: RG550 project idea thread.

I was reading that Ibanez painted the LNG JEMs white and painted the neon green over the white. I honestly couldn't care less whether I have an exact match to the shade of LNG, but I do want to need sunglasses when I open this case!
