RG550 vs RG565 - Which one?

Hey everybody--

Just curious whatchy'all think about this one. *I've never owned a 565 and I think I really want one, but I wonder about the feel and sound versus the 550, maybe even the 560, of which I have owned both. *Yeah, I got rid of them and was stupid to do it. *I'm in the process of rebuilding my "stable". *I'm sure some of you out there have some good info on this one. *I'm guessing there's not a ton of difference. *I'm planning on picking up one of the two, and could use a little advice here.

As always, thanks a ton. *Don't know where I'd be without all of your help.

Personally I'd take the RG565 just because I dig that reverse headstock. You can always get a RG550 some other time since there all over the place

I agree. The 565s are a bitch to find, and they're awesome guitars. If you can find one, get it. The 550s are a dime a dozen.

do a forum search on 565 for more info. i bought one new in '92 and thought it sucked with the 2-1 pickup config... very limiting and useless. Not a good bang for the buck plus the klunky old neck-joint. They're all over ebay... not rare... PASS... glen

I agree with Glen on the 565... They're cool looking - especially with the color-matched inlay and reverse headstock - but the stock pickups are not Ibanez' finest hour, and they aren't nearly as versatile as a stock 550... I don't mind the old-style neck joint so much, but considering you can get a new 550 for much less than a 565 as a rule, I'd definitely go with the 550...

I think the RG565 is a fun "one trick pony" guitar. Good fun if you've got a few others in your collection and want another more "metal" looking RG sort of thing. Forget the fact that's it's not all that versatile this is metal, land of the bridge humbucker, drop in a Lawrence L-500 and you're away:biggrin:

I'm totally with jono.

I've got 7 ibanez's - 3 jems, a rg550, a rg750, a rg770dx and a pgm30, and seeing as I have those already in my arsenal, one of the few non-jem guitars I'd still spring for would be a rg565.

I totally groove on the way they look. reverse headstocks and colour matched dots rule!

obviously I'd cram some dimarzios in there double quick, but other than that, it's a cool guitar!

all IMHO, obviously.

cheers,
--clive.

I'd think about getting one for a few reasons. *If you've been dreaming about a sustainer, this one's set up for a single coil already. *As I recall, they were reverse routed, so this would make a nice maple top or swirl candidate. *Plus, they're a little more rare. *If you can get it cheap, do it i guess.

slug,
it depends on you:
if you play, get the 550, way more versatile,
if you collect, get the 565, way cooler.

I just picked up a 565 for $200, and at that price, it gets cool points for the reverse headstock and it is not a front-routed-can't-do-much-with-a-new-finish guitar. *There's not much money invested in it so tearing it up isn't a problem, yet it has enough quality to merit putting some cash in for refinishing or otherwise.

I had a USAC Metal Design with the same config. *Versatility of tonal possibilities is something of a non-issue if you just want to have fun and play guitar. *It is what it was - as Jono put it - a metal guitar.

It's really up to you and the facts are the facts - essentially it is a RG520/50/60/70 that is missing some pickups, everything else is the same.

Ah, everything else is the same, except for that wickedly cool reverse headstock and colored dots.

You know, I don't like the colored dots! *I am exploring other options with them, because I am going to refinish the whole guitar.

A friend of mine has a blue 565. I set it up for him and I loved playing it. Too bad it was so beat-up 'cause I would have made him an offer on it.
