RG550DY Question

How would I be able to tell the difference between an older Rg550DY and the reissue? I found one at a pawn shop for $349 and I put a deposit on it (of course). I have to be descrete about these things so my wife doesn't found out, so I can't just put it on a card. I should have it in a few weeks.
Anyway, this RG doesn't have a serial number, but I can see a gummy spot where the serial number should be. It doesn't have an AANJ, the pickups aren't labeled, and the trem is also unlabeled. Overall it is in excellent condition except one of the screws that attach the nut to the neck is missing. I think this is an older RG because it looks as if there was a sticker with the serial number and the newer RG's are stamped. What I don't know is if the reissues are the same way. I appreciate any info.

Re: RG550DY Question

Sounds like you have a older RG550 there. The new ones have a trem plate that has the 20th logo on it and the neck has two stripes on the back.

Re: RG550DY Question

Also the original Edge bridge will have "Licensed by Floyd Rose" on by the fine tuners, the Edge on the 20th doesn't.

Plus the serial number on the back of the headstock will start F07

Re: RG550DY Question

Sweet. I knew someone would have a little info that I didn't. I am pretty excited about it. I've wanted one forever and was considering getting a new one sometime this year. Thanks...

Re: RG550DY Question

New ones have a 5 pc. neck. The stripes are a dead giveaway.

Re: RG550DY Question

Yes, lots of differences!

1: 5-piece neck on the 20th.
2: Neck plate (thick and chunky on the 20th, with a RG Anniversary logo stamped in).
3: Condition! A 20th is gonna be in better health than a 19-20 year old original.
4: Trem spring cavity cover (20th has printed logo).
5: Volume control placement (further towards the tone knob on the 20th).
6: No "Licensed Under Floyd Rose Patents" stamp on the RG 20th bridge.
7: Front-mounted lock nut on the 20th.
8: Serial number.
9: Pickups. My original 550 from 1987 had a set of screw-head pole-pieces and a set of fixed ones. The 20th has a set of allen/hex head poles and a set of fixed ones.
10: I can't think of anything else.

Re: RG550DY Question

Great. I'm sure now that it is an older guitar. I wish the guitar still had the serial number decal in tact so I could know the year that it was made. Bummer. Thanks for the info. You guys rock.

Re: RG550DY Question

You might be able to find an indication of when it was made if you look in the neck pocket, but you'll never have an exact number (serial number) if it's no longer on the back of the headstock.

Cool. Is losing the serial number a common problem?

That might be an accurate way of dating it, because the original (1987's) had paper sticker serials on the back of the headstock. The later models had a proper decal underneath clearcoat. I can't imagine it has a decal under clear which has become damaged so much you can't see it, or unless it was sanded off.

EDIT: In fact, reading your original post again I am now sure it's an 87.

Yep, both my original RFRs have no serial number.

If it has a DY headstock, it could be an '87, '88, '90, '91, '92 or '93. '89s had a black headstock, not matching DY.

I'm not sure when the new stickers that were lacquered over started, but certainly '87 and '88 were unlacquered and get lost easily.

Re: RG550DY Question

That's funny because that's what I'm worried about. I'll have to 'let her believe' that I did a trade or something-she knows that I'm a total gear geek and sell and trade all the time.

BTW-This 550DY has a black headstock.

Re: RG550DY Question

The headstock doesn't say 'RG Series' on it-does that mean anything?
