RG550DYs - a thought...

RG550DYs seem to be very popular at the moment, and not many on the market either. You see the odd one on FleaBay, but not many at all. There are a whole bunch of people who seem to want one too, myself included.

How come they don't sell for muchos money when they do come up for sale??

Re: RG550DYs - a thought...

This past week I saw one... parted out. Possibly 2 reasons, somewhat interconnected:

-People who want to get rid of them think that the "80's" finish is an anachronism and don't realize that there's still plenty of cache and demand for that finish style.

-People are still convinced that they'll make more money by parting out an older RG than they would selling the whole thing. The thought might be that whomever buys it will refinish it, so if they sell the body for $100, the neck for $150, the edge trem for $75, the tuners for $30, and the electronics and pickguard for $50, they'll do better than if they sold it together, when they sometimes can go for lower. Little do they know...

That's exactly what I mean! Loads of people want them, but they sell for really low amounts. It doesn't make sense...

There's one at the moment on evilbay, that's had 26 bids and is sitting at $550, with 1 day to go.

I don't know what people mean by low amounts.

In '93, the list was only $899 on a 550dy.

remember the road flare red 550 that went for $995 last year.

From my perspective, something that's between US$350 - $700 (for a 770) isn't cheap when you factor in the conversion to AU $$$$. And this is without shipping costs and other incidentials.

I agree with you there IbGirl, we get sluged hard when it come's to shipping to Australia! & to top it off the customs dutys & Gov tax's are added after the guitar has landed! its a Joke & they make more money for nothing

(what an injustice it is to us buyers!)

My $0.02c AUD

Cheers... Jake.

Yeah, I know it's expensive to import from the US (it's the same here in the UK) but what about local prices in OZ/UK? They seem to be fairly low too?

Re: RG550DYs - a thought...

bikeman, if you are asking about Oz **** prices? i can't comment, i haven't seen a 550DY come up within the last few months. A 570 went for $360AU recently.
Shop prices on 550s(when they do happen to get them), are expensive, around the AU$900 - $1000 mark.
I recently just missed out on getting a RG1550 from a store for $650AU.

Just found this on you know where 7422905943 - If some silly bugger uses the buy it now, they can have it for.......wait for it.................drum roll...............a measely............US$1,500 *yikes*

I've been checking out evilbay regularly the last couple of months and i haven't seen one with a starting price of US$900. Is that the highest starting price EVER listed for a 550DY?

Re: RG550DYs - a thought...

That price is mad - it's not even an original 80s one, but a 1999 re-issue with AANJ! Crazy...

Re: RG550DYs - a thought...

Heres a few pics of my Desert Yellow 550 (1989 model) and my Road Flair Red 550 (1987). Both of them are in DEAD MINT condition, VERY VERY hard to find them like that. The DY even still has the plastic on the back plates and truss rod covers. The RF has a pretty dirty fingerboard from playing it alot but paint and hardware are a 10. I've seen guitars hanging on the wall new at stores with more wear than these, I've really babied them. It took me a LONG LONG time to find these two colors in mint condition, especially the Road Flair Red one, their even harder to find than the Dy's, and in mint condition is almost impossible.
