RG685

I just bought RG685 on eBay. It seems rare since there is very little information online about it. I would appreciate any references or info anyone may have for it.

Re: RG685

Congrats, that's a very cool guitar. I don't know that the guitar is rare, it's just that it was a Japan-only model, so there probably aren't many in the US. The RG685 was released in 1997 and was available for four years. The BTB finish you have was available 1998-2000.

The differences between the 500, 600 and 700 Series guitars are pretty small to someone who isn't an Ibanez collector, but in the case the primary difference would be V Series pickups in the 500, QM Series in the 600 and IBZUSA (OEM DiMarzio) in the 700 Series.

The year this model came out was also the first year of the Prestige line, so this would have been the highest non-Prestige RG model.

Re: RG685

I have an RG685 also. Mine is a 1998 model.

This has the super wizard neck and plays great. My advice is do NOT change out the pups. The QM pups are nice and powerful enough to shred and take effects well.

Re: RG685

Thanks for the info. I believe my was made in 2000. The pick ups are Dimarzio X2N the middle pickup is a QMS1 and the neck is a QM1. Looks like some already replace one of them.

Re: RG685

The guitar is in very good condition. Any idea what it may be worth?

Mine with one dent, here in Japan, cost about 550 USD. Since it wasn't released outside the US, I'm sure you could fetch at least 700-800. It has the lo-pro, was never released outside Japan and is in good condition. I know I could easily make a profit on mine if I sold it in the US.

Re: RG685

I don't think you will ever see $700-800 in the US for one of these. People might list them for that much but nobody pays that. The $510 the OP paid is about the correct market price.

Don't put too much stock in the "not released in the US thing". That only matters if the guitar has some name recognition lie a J.Custom. I see a lot of really nice non-US Prestige guitars on eBay for no more than US-spec guitars.

THIS^^^

unfortunately- the 685 has no "street cred" here in the US. Nobody knows what it is so they won't pay more than any other non- prestige MIJ RG. I've seen a couple of RG7xx's go for more than they should lately. Maybe the used guitar market is strengthening a little- maybe a couple of people just paid too much- either way, a 6xx just wont go for the same amount as a 7xx.

Still a badd-asss guitar though. I'd like to have one someday.

Re: RG685

That sucks. Such an amazing guitar too... BTW there's one at Shimokura in Tokyo but it looks worse for wear... I'd try to save it but no money

Re: RG685

Not knocking the guitar at all. There's a lot to love about it. But for $800 you can get an RG3120 or some other nice Prestige guitars.

I had a saved ebay search for that model, but everytime I checked it there were none available. Now I know why.

Re: RG685

I just received it today and I am very impressed. The guitar is practically mint condition. Sounds great and shreds awesome. For $510 minus $100 for the case I feel like I stole it.
