RG760, RG321MHE or other

Hi!

I am new to this forum and currently using a SA160CA which was my first guitar for the past 5 years. I have tried a friend's RG and found the neck so much easier to work with and have been on the lookout for another guitar. I have my eyes on a used '91 RG760 with original IBZ/USA C2 and F2 pickups with some rust [which I would be assuming is normal for ~20 year old guitar and could use some TLC]. The person is looking for around $599AUD but I was thinking maybe $350 tops (it is an auction) for this used guitar.

It is really hard to find reviews on this guitar so I decided to ask this great community Otherwise, my local guitar store is selling a RG321MHE for $449 AUD and I can probably haggle that down but reviews on the EMG pickups in that aren't too promising.

I am open to other options/brands/models but I was ideally looking for around the $450AUD mark.

I play alot of everything but tend alot more towards rock and a bit of metal and would like to shred.

Hope you can help me out!

Thanks

Re: RG760, RG321MHE or other

Assuming the AUS/USD exchange is still pretty close, $350 for a rg760 would be an amazing price. I've been looking for one to sand down for a long time, but do not wanna spend over 500 because I'm going to sand it. I've yet to really have any luck. If you want my opinion save and get one of these. I'm a sucker for the square heel though (currently holding a rg560, rg570, 540s, and a rg750....yeah I like them)

I also agree that I'd hold out for 760. I got my first one (own two) more than 20 years ago new, and of my 20+ Ibanez, she's still one of my favorites. A 321MH pales in comparison.

Also, nice to see another Ashevillian here. I grew up there, and wish I could get back more often. As for finding one for under $500, I currently know of jewel Blue one that may not even need sanding that you could come away with spending less than $500. If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you the link to where you can find it online.

First off--welcome to Jemsite!
You'd better snag that 760--it's one mean machine! You won't find many reviews of that model, as they are less common than their brothers: RG-750 andRG-770. Some specs, just different pickup config. The 760 is almost the same as the 560 with exception of the sharkstooth inlays and pickups. That 760 is from the golden age of Ibanez RGs, and should not be ignored. Grab it, clean it up, then come back and thank us for letting you know that it's a far better choice...

Here is some reference material and good reading to "bone up" on your RG-760 knowledge:

Agreed, the 760 is a great guitar and very under appreciated.

Shouldn't
Be any different than an other 760--they've all got square heel neck joints, etc.

Re: RG760, RG321MHE or other

Other than adding matching headstocks in '90 (oddly enough, the white one still has a black headstock), the only significant change was for '92, which had a direct-mount bridge pickup.

Re: RG760, RG321MHE or other

sorry, but 600$ is a "fair" price for the 760. If you can get it for 350, then do it. It will blow the 321 out of the water in every possible way. 400 for the 321 is over priced as well. Id suggest going used, you will get a lot more guitar for the money.

Re: RG760, RG321MHE or other

I will tout the goodness of the 321mh day in and day out. I have very few negative things to say about the one I have. That being said, You'd be an idiot to pass up a 500, 600 or 700 from the late 80's early 90's for the right price, and that is a fair price.

Re: RG760, RG321MHE or other

Wow! What a great forum! I expected maybe one or two replies by the time I came back from uni, but not this many! Thanks tonnes everyone!

The auction is on ebay with listing no: 150646467945 [thanks alaskabat - edited]

The guitar is missing the trem cover, trem arm and the knobs will need replacing etc. The pictures are actually looking like it will need a decent amount of work...

What would be the max you would be willing to pay? I figured $350 was good according to other research on the net but would $400 for this be good? I am getting so excited just looking at it!

Thank you once again for all your help!

Re: RG760, RG321MHE or other

If you can get it for 400--that's a great deal. Just a heads-up though, posting links to eBay listings is a big no-no around these parts. Listing numbers are OK--just not the links.
