RG920QM Premium or RG3120?

Hi all -

all the recent threads on the rg920qm have me gassing for one. But how does it compare to a rg3120? I have played the rg3120 and liked it alot an am considering getting one fron the used market. I do like the rg920 but would have to buy without playing it so i was wondering how it compares to the rg3120. Which would you pick given the choice?

thanks in advance,

jeff

Re: RG920QM Premium or RG3120?

It really depends on whether you want a new or used guitar. honestly i'm really GASsing for the 920, but the 3120 DOES have an edge. I think the P/Us are better on the 3120 as well.

But go ahead, give Rich some business.... Buy a Premium!!!

Re: RG920QM Premium or RG3120?

For years now you guys explained to me that the prestiges made in Japan are the best of the bunch and now some indonesian guitar is to be changing all this ? I go for the 3120 because its made in Japan, because its a Prestige, because it comes with a case, has an edge and because the resale value is probably twice as good.

I also believe they came with DiMarzios and had a mahogany body? if that is so that would be 2 more reasons for me.

I'd get a Premium. I've got a 3120, it's awesome. Best Prestige I've owned. I'm looking to get a similar guitar and I'm 100% sold on a Premium. There are some subtle differences, but what each one lacks it makes up for in other areas. The Premium being made in Indonesia should be irrelevant. If it was the exact same guitar for the exact same price coming out of the Prestige shop, would it be a better guitar?

It always was one of the biggest selling points. Made in Japan. Now its irrelevant ?
But my question while not having seen the premiums is are they on par with the prestiges? And if so is the prestige line obsolete ?

I meant irrelevant based on the fact that it's obviously not your typical Indo Ibanez.

From what I gather, the Premiums are in essence a Prestige minus some of the Prestige appointments. Veneer instead of a 4mm top. Things like that will keep the cost to us down. That and the premium is basically one guitar with color options and that's it. I have to say the RG920 is far more impressive looking than anything out of the Prestige line up the last few years. The offset dots are killer.

Re: RG920QM Premium or RG3120?

I really liked a lot of the RG3120's that I've played in the past.

At this point, I would go with a 920QM just due to new technologies, new processes, etc.

Thanks. Still go with a prestige. The maple cap is not just there for looks i always thought but also for tone and all the other reasons The RG3120 has offset dots too i believe.

My 3120 has a 4mm thick maple cap on top of mahogany. The premium is a veneer although I have no idea how thick over basswood. I don't have super sensitive ears, but I for the first time noticed that the unplugged sound of my 3120 is quite vibrant vs other Prestiges I've owned. I'm curious as to how the premium sounds unplugged? The 3120 does have offset dots yes, which was the icing on the cake for me.

My only dilemma is sorting out which color premium I'd get. I really like them all and none really stand out. So far it's the red, orange and violet, but since my 3120 is blueish I'm leaning towards the red or orange. Damn you Ibanez!! Lol

I don't think you can make a comparison between the 920 and the 3120.... they're just to different to make a comparison......... Its like comparing apples to tennis balls, same basic shape-but that's about it.

Re: RG920QM Premium or RG3120?

I know, but he's not giving any info on the guitars themselves: what's the condition of the 3120? are they both in the same price range?? And even if they were identical in price and condition, the two have VERY little in common.

Do you want a Basswood or Mahogany body?
Flamed top or quilted veneer
Lo-Pro/Edge or EZ2
Paf-Pro's or DiMarzio/IBZ
"prestige" fret treatment or "Premium" fret treatment-(from what Rich has described, the Premiums seem to be better.
Wizard Premium or Original Wizard neck profile

There's just to much different to compare. It has to be about what he like's best.
