RGA121 Question

I am a new member, love the board, great info. Now for my question. I just picked up an RGA121 before I even brought it home I had Evo's installed, neck and bridge. But now the guitar is always out of tune. I tune it up, play one song and out it goes. What gives? is it something I am overlooking?

Re: RGA121 Question

probably needs a nut setup, when a nut is not well setup it can create grip and go out of tune often, i've seen a few 121 owners on this board say they needed the nut setup but once it was, it was brilliant

i'm not exactly sure whats invlved in proper nut work, i assume just filing
here's a tip too- if you run a graphite pencil along the grooves of the nut before you restring sometimes, it'll act like lubricant with the string and stop a lot of nut catching

Re: RGA121 Question

I have an RGA321FSPB and the SAME EXACT THING happened. Every time I played (not even a whole song, more like... five chords), the thing would go completely out of tune. I stretched and stretched and stretched the strings, I tried different gauges, etc., etc. It just wouldn't ****ing stay in tune.

So, finally I brought it back to the place where I teach and told them about it because this literally went on for months. One of the guys there took a file and filed the grooves in the nut where the strings go. So, I put some new strings on, stretched them and -- PROBLEM SOLVED!

Maybe that'll work for you...

Re: RGA121 Question

Be careful if you take a file to the nut- it isn't complicated, but go slow.

Nut files are best (but expensive), but I've had great luck with welding tip files (and they're cheap).

Re: RGA121 Question

I already described the same problem on my RGA121 a few months ago. It seems like the Team J is a bit uneasy with standard nut.

My RGA came with a nut whose slots were too narrow to keep the guitar in tune. The slots weren't deep enough also. So the guitar sounded out of tune even with open strings perfectly tuned (stings were actually bent to touch the frets).

Any guitar tech can fix this kind of issue. However, it is a bit disappointing when you buy a stripped down guitar like an RGA to find this kind of problem. I was expecting to get an instrument with millimetric setup.

Or maybe, it is a choice from Ibanez to let the player adapt the nut to his taste? Or maybe I am too indulgent with Team J people?

One advice to RGA owner regarding string winding: as there is no locking nut, you need to do some more turn with the string around the tuner to prevent the string from slipping (especially on brand new guitar with super slippy finish on metal parts).
