RGT42DMFK-TFL vs RG2550Z

Hi guys. I have recently come into a couple deals on two guitars. I can only buy one. While reading this bare in mind I am predominantly my bands rhythm guitar player so I won't be wailing on the bridge...

Guitar 1, RG2550Z. Nothing special added. In good condition.

Guitar 2, RGT42DXFM. The stock pickups and wiring were replaced with the special configuration used in Petrucci's JPM guitars... DiMarzio Steve's Special humbucker in the bridge and DiMarzio Air Norton in the neck position. The five-way switch has been replaced with a three-way switch, and the middle position splits the humbuckers and takes the inside poles from each pickup and runs them together.

Both will probably be in the $700 range.

I am a bit torn here... I know the 2550z is considered the better guitar. But this RGT has had some quality upgrades done to it. A lot of the people rip on the EDGE III tremolo. But all reports I see on it have nothing against it's ability to stay in tune. Which is the #1 concern of mine.

Opinions?

Thanks!!!

the edge zero is a far better trem than the edge 3 and will last a lot longer. it also has locking studs, improving it's tuning stability. the 2550z also is a prestige level ibanez; higher quality MIJ parts.

if they're both $700 it's a no-brainer.

Those upgrades are all concerning the electronics. I wouldn't consider anything having to with electronics to be a big deal. Look at the instrument itself. I can tell you from playing both of those models that when comparing difference between the neck on the RGT vs 2550z, the RGT might as well have a raw 2 x 4 for a neck.

Well I wound up buying the RGT42DMFK. The Prestige sold and there was no other Prestige to be found in my price range.

Any ways, this guitar is a real good guitar.

It sounds great, and is smooth and fast.

Tiger, I appreciate your input. But your critique of the neck is a bit much. It's a damn good neck and a long ways from a raw 2x4.

It was an exaggeration. The difference between a MIK or MII Ibanez neck and a Prestige one should be evident when you hold them in your hand. Sorry to hear the Prestige was sold.
