S series - Edge zero ii vs ZR

Hi guys

Ive been thinking about getting an S series for years now, and ive noticed some changes.

The S used to have a 22 fret neck and its own ZR trem. Now they have 24 frets, and an Edge zero ii trem (the S520 BBS I was looking at).

surely this just makes it an RG with a different body now?

Initially, panic set in a bit when I saw the "ii" in the trem description, as previous edge's with ii or iii in the name have not been very highly regarded, but googling about the Edge Zero ii is showing positive comments all round.

I have an RG with an Edge Pro, and I liked the idea of the S being a bit different with the 22 frets and the ZR trem!!

I could seek out a good condition used S with the ZR trem, or should I just go for the new model?

Thoughts guys??

I think your reading a bit too much into the 24-fret thing. The main things that make an S an S are still there. With all the complaints I've heard regarding the ZR killing sustain on the S-series, I'd look at the EZII as a welcomed upgrade. having 2 more frets only makes a difference if you use them.......AFAIK, the scale length has never changed.

Don't the ZR and EZII have the same sustain block?

No idea, but the complaints I've read about were concerning the bearing fulcrum. I also have no idea if there's any validity to it. I do know the ZR has been discontinued........coincidence?

Re: S series - Edge zero ii vs ZR

Thanks guys

Yeah the 24fret thing doesn't really bother me, its just it would be nice to have the S feel different to the RG.

When discussing the ZR bridge, people usually said, it was good, but different (compared to a knife edge trem) and that's what I liked about it.

Now, even if the edge zero ii is better, its still kind of the same...

I haven't actually played either, so that will be my first challenge, trying to find a shop round here with both...

I personally like the ZR. I've had some problems with it vibrating, but that was the springs vibrating, and was fixed easily.

It has a great feel, though different from a Floyd type tremolo.

Re: S series - Edge zero ii vs ZR

i'll try and have a go on both, but that's likely going to be a challenge round here.

i'm back in "guitar mode" at the moment, and I keep seeing more and more Ibanez guitars that I want (in addition to my existing RG)... such as:

S series - the subject of this thread
SZ series, ideally SZ1220, SZ2020FM or SZ4020FM in the transparent black,
RG550 in Desert Sun Yellow (I need one of these in my life!!)
RGA with a fixed bridge.. the RGA32 in white looks nice.
JS series in white - although I doubt that will every happen due to costs (if the next gen JS100 has the Edge zero ii bridge, i'll have one in white please Ibanez!)

therefore, its not a huge leap to get 2 S series guitars, with the ZR trem, and one with an edge of some description!

why am I suddenly addicted to Ibanez guitars??
