S2540 Question

Has anyone ever noticed that on the '97 catalogue cover there is what appears to be a S2540nt Prestige but it has abalone binding around the body and inlays running down the neck and around the headstock? From what I can tell the 2540 did not become available until 98 and guess what?? no abalone binding, just regular white binding. I am wondering if the guitar on the cover was some type of prototype or what because I always wanted to pick up one of those with the abalone.

Thanks.

It's a 5400. The one on the catalog does have a 21st plaque inlay the production run didn't though.

OMG Rich - Thanks for the info! Do you see many of these for sale or is yours for sale? I am really interested in picking up this guitar that I have loved since It first graced the cover in 1997

They made very few, my guess is 12 would be about right. I've only seen 2 for sale since 98'.

Re: S2540 Question

The 5400? It didn't have a logo so I'm going to have to say, no.

Re: S2540 Question

I was wondering about the absence of either the J Custom or Prestige logo. Was it a prototype of some sort ?

Re: S2540 Question

5400's were limited production

Wiki is reminding me they were JC's, Thursday nights aren't my sharpest

Re: S2540 Question

It certainly looks like a 1997 J-Custom S5400 but with no logo on the headstock. Do you have any idea why those early '97 j-custom logos had the Reg 1.497,480 number on all those guitars ? It's on the case also. I can't find anything about that anywhere.

Re: S2540 Question

There are 3 different logo periods for JC's, that's just the first version JC logo.

Re: S2540 Question

Got you. Thanks. I bought my buddies 1997 s3040bs today and I must say it is one beautiful instrument. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is incredible. It's play great and sounds fantastic. Sorry if I was winding you up last night about my advert in classifieds but was only trying to find out what these guitars are really worth. I don't think I would ever sell this but will sell my other Ibanez because it does not come anywhere near the incredible quality of this guitar. I will do a NGD soon with some nice pics. Thanks for the help and info. (You bear the same name of my great old friend Richie Harris the actor from where I live. )

Re: S2540 Question

Much less than what a new one will cost you. There was a time there were 3 of those on ebay at the same time and nobody could get $1500 for one.

Re: S2540 Question

Music is not about money for me and never has been. I play because I enjoy it and music has been my life. Been playing professionally now for over 40 years and I can safely say that this particular Ibanez guitar is one of the very best I have had the pleasure of owning. It's a keeper I reckon.
