S470?

Just got back from the guitar store (again) on my continuing hunt for a new axe.

I played a bunch of RGs, none of which really 'spoke' to me. Then I picked up an ugly purple S470. The guitar felt great, and I almost walked out of the store with it right then. However, reason took hold, and I figured I should find out more before dropping $400 on a guitar. The serial number started with C03, which I think means March of 2003, which would mean the bridge was a Lo-TRS, right? This makes me nervous, as I've only heard horror stories about these bridges.

The new S series seem to come with a ZR bridge. I've never seen one, and the guitar store didn't have a new one. Anyone played a guitar with this bridge?

Any advice?

Thanks!

Well, are you sure the guitar had a TRS trem? The '03 S Guitars should ALL have the ZR bridge.

take a look at http://www.ibanezrules.com/namm/2003/trems.htm , theres a photo of one of those new ZR trems somewhere on the page. Compare, the guitar you played should have had exactly that trem.

Replying to my own post, a few hours later

I've been browsing, and S540s seem to be well-loved, and seem to be going used for under $400. A local shop has one listed in 'very good' condition for $399, and they seem to go on Ebay for $300-$400 (although buying a guitar without having tried it first bothers me)

Anyone play one of these?

i tried a 03 S on a local shop, it was setup really bad (at least a pinky finger between strings and frets), but the ZR trem blew my head!!!
i started bitching on it, my friends couldn't believe their eyes, and at the end... still in perfect tune!!!

i couldnt believe my ears...

other than that, i cant say, cause i was in a hurry and couldnt amplify it.

Hi there keithb.

That s470 starting with serial number C03, means it was made in the Cort Korean factory I think. The 03 does suggest 2003. But I also thought that in 2003 all Ibanez S series guitars came with the ZR trem.

Is that a new S540 that you're looking at? I've played a late 90's model S540 with a lo pro edge trem. I loved it. The lack of weight was amazing yet the tone was big. It came with the Q series pickups. Not sure what they're putting in S guitars today.

One gripe I had with the S was that after awhile, if playing sitting down, I would get a shooting pain in my right leg occasionally. It took awhile for that to happen though. At first it feels great cause it feels like nothing is there, but then I guess having some weight putting pressure on such a small spot on my leg for awhile is bound to do something to a nerve there.

I would strongly suggest looking for an S series with a Lo-pro Edge Trem, and have a play with it.

I myself haven't tried the new ZR equipped ones but others here have and seem to like them. Rich for example, owner of Ibanez Rules (link at the top of every forum page) seems to like the ZR trem. I tend to believe what Rich says...on occasion

What I don't understand is this: now the only S series guitars are the S470 and Prestige spec S1620. How does Ibanez justify putting the same (terrible) pickups in a $450 S470 that they put in a $250 RG? The S line used to have the slightly better Axis pickups and a TRS trem. They replaced the TRS with a better trem, but replaced the Axis pups with PowerSounds!

So confusing
