S520ex

Anyone own a S520EX? I'm quite liking the black one. One reason I might get one is because of the ZR trem. If you own it, what are your thoughts?

Re: S520ex

I played a friend of mines. It plays good. Needed a proper setup though.
Overall it was a solid guitar for the money.

I didn't like it as much as my s540ltd(edge) or s2170prestige(zr).

If you have the extra $$$ go for the s2170. The s2170 is sweet.

My 2 pennies.

Re: S520ex

I saw the 2170 and while I'm sure it's great, it's twice as much as the 520EX. With a pickup change and maybe a coil tap fitted I think the 520 would be a great guitar for the cash. I'm usually an RG player but I can't find one I like nowadays. The S520EX looks like a pretty decent alternative.

Re: S520ex

it is.....

BTW...I paid $1050 for the s2170 new with tax. Nicer case,pickups,neck,tuners,binding...it's a prestige.

That said, the 520ex is a good guitar too. Go for it.

Re: S520ex

I just bought one and it probably shipped today. I'll get it mid-next week sometime. I'll give you all the details as soon as I fiddle on it a bit.

I'll more than likely have to swap out the pickups, but my head is spinning trying to find the right combo considering that its a mahogany body which is rich in mids. I do like a mid-heavy tone, but I don't want it to be overkill and muddy up my sound.

These are combos I'm considering and y'all's feedback is most welcome:

B: Tone Zone N: Air Norton [probably too middy for this guitar]

B: Tone Zone N: Full Shred

B: Duncan JB N: Duncan Jazz

B Tone Zone N: PAF Pro

B: Tone Zone N: Breed

Please feel free to offer comments and suggestions on these and other ideas.

Re: S520ex

It's hard to suggest, not knowing what kind of sound you are looking for. My thoughts were a Humbucker From Hell in the neck position to give a tone with the properties of a single coil, and something that cleans up nicely but can handle overdrive too. Not sure about the bridge pickup. I think the Tone Zone might not be the best choice for mahogany.

I'm still in two minds whether to buy Q-tuner GL pickups. They look astounding, and I read great reviews, but I still haven't heard sound clips of the GL's playing through a distorted amp.

The only other thing I'd maybe do is fit a coil tap. I have no idea how well Q-tuners split, though, or even if they split at all.

These will give you an idea about the kind of stuff I play...

Hope that helps. I usually don't scoop mids, as I feel that sacrifices tonal quality. I like the meaty richness when keeping the mids at a moderate level.

Re: S520ex

OK, so pretty much you're after a metal sound. Have you looked into Bill Lawrence pickups? I think the brightness would compliment the mahogany body of the 520.

Re: S520ex

this guitar sounds heavy, my friend has it dropped in C tuning and its heavy, but it was heavy even in standard tuning, the pickups are decent but i'd change them out.

Re: S520ex

Can't knock Korean guitars nowadays, look at the Peavey V-Type! Awesome. Almost custom shop kinda attention to detail.

Re: S520ex

Yep the Korean prestige S is good. I'd say it is on par with my 1990 japan made s540ltd.

The S2170 prestige uses nicer materials though.

My friends korean made 520ex didn't seem inferior like the older Ibanez korean guitars were. The addition of the zr trem has helped significantly. Even if the guitars weigh more as a result.

So not only do they sound heavy, in reality they are actually heavier (weight).
