Sanded the back of my neck

After watching a video on youtube I decided to take some very fine steel wool I had and scuff the back of my neck the whole length and I have to say it made it quite a bit faster. I could really feel the difference when I slid my finger along and hit where I stopped scuffing it. Even when I pick it up I have to be more carefull because of the difference. Anybody else do this? I was spraying it with that finger ease stuff, but that smelled so strong it gave me headaches.

Re: Sanded the back of my neck

I've sand away the lacquer for a couple of my necks and refinished it with Both Tung oil and Tru Oil. I am starting to prefer the feel of Tru Oil then Tung Oil though.

Warning: If you choose to sand away the lacquer, please refinish it by oiling or you will see black stripes from your sweat on the neck.

If you do choose to refinish it by oiling, you will dent it really easy. Even slight glaze from your fingernail will cause dents.

On the good side, it's no lacquer smooth. It literally feels like your touching barewood.

Did you sand it right to the bare wood?

Yes, I do it very often. I've even sanded a few millimeters off the back of a Wiz2 neck.... it makes it VERY playable!!! just be sure to finish off with a good oil or oil/finish.....

Here's a vid of my last "butcher job" it's a 1999 Wizard neck that I sanded down to 16mm at the 1st fret and 17.5mm at the 12th.... I also made the heel contour match the body lines.........

I finished it with "Watco danish oil and finish"

Re: Sanded the back of my neck

I did the same thing to 2 necks recently. I finished them with tung oil. They feel very nice, much better than lacquer feel. Check this thread:
