SC 620 - your take on this guitar...

hi, this guitar is on top of my guitar priority list right now, hope the nice people here can give their second opinions before i close in on the deal, kudos in advance!

*SC 620 vs SC420- pros & cons?
*how exactly does the SC neck feel? any comparisons to the wizards?
*anyone replaced those small machine heads before?

I've never played a 620 before, but I have played a 420. *Very nice guitar.

Differences between the two are just cosmetic, except that the 620 has an ebony fretboard and the 420 has rosewood.

The neck is very different from a Wizard. *It is much thicker (20mm vs 17mm) and has a smaller (more round) radius.

Can't tell you about the machine heads, but I don't see why you couldn't replace them if you wanted to.

I like mine. *I'm really a radius kinda guy, but wanted a hardtail as a 2nd axe for dropped tuning, so this was my choice. *It turns out that I spend more time on this than my radius! *Which is weird, because I always liked the radius better than my old s540. *I must just like the thicker neck.

Pickups sound wonderful, IMO. *The bridge rattles very slightly - the string breakover point isn't sharp like on many stop tailpieces.

hey, thanks for the responses so far.

i find the S body to be the most comfortable for me, to a certain extent, i find the design intelligent too.

right, i'm ok with the thicker neck, thin doesn't equal the best IMO. i'm in search of a fixed bridge, non-trem, shorter scale neck ibanez guitar. i also own a GAX70, i like the shorter scale neck but the tune-o-matic type bridge hinders my playing style. i was hunting for the discontinued Frank Gambale fixed bridge guitar (the FGM 270 i think) but that's kinda impossible to find today. the JS 700 is also on my list but having owned a gibson Les Paul, i'm not keen on the finished neck.

I have the SC420, and I must say, I absolutely love it. *The sound just is incredible (replace the stock pups though). *The 620 is just a fancier flame top deal, but both are made in Japan. *It looks as though my SC has found its long lost little brother (the new RG421). *

Germ,
You may want to consider a JS600, if you can find one. String through the body JS with a satin-type finish on the back. I had one for a while, pretty decent fixed bridge JS...

Dude, don't get the JS600. *Its Korean. *If you go the JS line, find a JS6 or JS6000. *

I don't get caught up in all that "US vs. Japan vs. Korea" nonsense. If it plays great, have fun with it. That's my motto. The 600 I had played pretty good. Just don't like that small bodystyle...

I hated the one I had. *I only buy Jap models now. *Maybe thats dumb, but once I get burned, I don't go back to the fire for another roast. *

the JS600 is a nice guitar but i still prefer the S-body. i was a little down when my dealer confirmed the discontinuation of the SC620 (DARN!!), i guess the 420 is a consolation. however, i'm now re-thinking the deal because of the SC's medium frets. my GAX70 has medium frets, they are cool but they somehow hinder fast playing styles. i keep going back to my S540 & other RGs...

i am also considering the RG421...

I like the small frets for chording. *I tend to get aggressive & take open chords out of tune with the big frets. *A bummer when recording. *Now I have both - a 540r with bigger frets (not huge like 6100s, though), and the sc620. *My only issue is, I'll never want to have them levelled - I'm afraid of losing any height!
