Scored a 540S...came with a nice surprise...

Just picked up an '87 540s in black cherry...nothing special, but it was cheap ($125 shipped). After it arrived, I discovered good news and bad. The bad--the seller had mentioned a neck crack, but said it played fine. Surprise...it's much worse, but I've fixed these before. Now for the good--it came with a nice little surprise in the trem cavity.

I'll repair the neck and get it playing again...looking forward to see how that little famous contraption works!

Just one word: grrrrrr.

That reminds me of that guy who snatched a '91 RG450 for 30 euros right before my eyes. I hate him.

I'm in for a 'best guitar deal you ever had' thread! (Ok, I just need *another* opportunity to mention my radius deal 6 months ago, lol)

Seriously, congrats. And don't forget to post a 3-word backstop review here!

After repairing the neck with carpenters wood glue, a bit of sanding, and 3 coats of Minwax Poly Satin (wipe-on finish) with sanding in between...we're back in business. The finish worked really well...after the final coast a bit of 320 grit and 0000 steel wool...it's not perfect but very nice, actually has that satiny smooth Prestige feel to it. The crack is still visible, but still holding after two hours of being strung up. ...should be just fine. (pics updated)

Still not quite sure how to set up the backstop...but I think I have it generally figured out. I actually don't have really high expectations, since I don't have any complaints about the edge fully free floating...we'll see.

nuno & horstausmforst...one better deal a couple years ago: I found and Ibanez S online..."black in good condition"...after a few emails I confirmed that it was an MIJ Edge model, so I threw the dice, sight unseen, for $150 shipped. It came and happened to be one of the first Gambale models...in about 8/10 condition...just needed a few minor parts and some TLC. What fun...must be that male hunting instinct.

I'd picked up a lipstick pink 540R a couple of years ago for $175 and had the pleasure of finding a Backstop as well. Good to see that there are still a few floating around! Mine now resides in my VWH. Love it!

if you want to know how to set it up, i have an original mint condition (i think it still is) instruction manual for these, i got all excited when i open the case on my VM1SH and found it, sadly not one in the trem cavity though.

let me know and i'll dig it out.

There are scans of the Backstop instructions posted here on Jemsite - I sent in those scans.
These should help out.

Rich has the scans on his website too for anyone who needs to learn how to set theres up! I`m starting to toy with the idea of putting mine in my PGM30 when it gets here
