second hand sz320 or sz520

Hello,

first of all sorry for my bad english, i live in the Netherlands.

I play electric guitar on a borrowed Micheal kelly Patriot Custom LP model of a friend of my for one year. I can buy it for 350,=.
So I was searching for comparable guitars but not that heavy. Something between Lp and strat.

Musicstyle is 80 rock and metallica/pantera/megadeth.

Does the sz320/520 fit in the style I like. I want to buy it second hand on the internet, so it is difficult to try one , because I don t want to drive throug the country. In the local store I played a PRS SE custom and an Indie IPR.
Other suggestions welcome?
Can I compare the neck and body (thickness) with the PRS or is the Ibanez thinner.

I hope you can give me advise, i think the sz is awesome.

Thanks already, regards

Re: second hand sz320 or sz520

S series are great. Light weight, great sound. VERY difficult to go wrong. That said, it seems they are just not for some people. I dunno if its a style thing, or a playability thing, but some people just dont like them. Their necks are CRAZY SKINNY, which you may not like, keep that in mind.

I wouldnt call it "in between a LP and strat" though. Definitely smaller then a strat. An RG on the other hand would be more in between.

In that case, we were discussing the rg570. Probably the best bang for the buck you get on the ibanez front.

Re: second hand sz320 or sz520

The OP is asking about the SZ, not the S series. Totally different beasts.

The SZ is lighter than a LP by a good bit and for thickness I would say it is between a LP and a Strat(leaning more towards the LP). Necks on the SZ's are a little on the thicker side but not too much(not like a '59 LP). All in all the SZ s a pretty nice guitar and a lot of folks feel it is a good substitute for a LP. IMO, they are a great "bang for the buck" instrument.

hope that helps

Re: second hand sz320 or sz520

I like the SZ320 it's nicer than the SZ520, but the SZR is good to. The SZ's have a heavy body but the sustain is amazing and they are really nice classic rock guitars, I have owned 2 SZ520's , 2 SZR 520 and the SZ4020. Highly recomend. I personally prefer the Prestige bolt on necks w/ a fixed bridge, try and find a RGA121 or a Fr2620.

Cool, I was always under the impression they were just hard tail S's. Consider me learned!

Re: second hand sz320 or sz520

Thanks for the reply.

@mattier303, I thought the SZR was not as good as the SZ. Is there a lot of difference between the SZR and the SZ. They are both for sale (second hand) for 275-300 euro ?

So when I read the comments both guitar series suit for the kind of music that I like ?

Thanks again

Re: second hand sz320 or sz520

No actually there is not that much different. I would go for the SZ320 over the SZ520, and I would say the SZR and the SZ320 are about equal. This is my own personal opinion. the SZR is heavier than the SZ320. I would add that the SZ320 had some Duncans in it if i am correct and the other two models have crappy PU's/ Either way your going to most likely want new PU's, but i think that the SZ320 has the the best stock PU's. Latley I think that the older SZ320 has a slightly lighter finish on it, I prefer to take steel wool or a really fine 3m sanding block to the back of the neck, making it less tacky. Good luck.

Re: second hand sz320 or sz520

I believe the differences in the SZ320, the SZ520 and the SZR720 are mostly visual. Not really sure about the electronics, but I am pretty sure that they are all Ibanez pups of some sort. From what I remember though the 320 had no binding, dot fret markers- the 520 had body binding(maybe neck binding?, can't really remember) and had only 1 fret mrker, that being a flame on the 12th fret- the 720 had full body, neck and headstock binding and the earlier ones had flame fret markers at the normal positions(3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, etc.). The later 720's had a multiple vine inlay if I'm not mistaken. All of the SZ's(320, 520 and 720) were all set neck, fixed TOM style bridges and were string through body.

The SZ320 and the SZ520 both came with the same duncan/IBZ pickups. They both weigh the same on average (different pieces of wood will have different weights) The main differences between the two guitars are:

1. Flamed/ Quilted maple veneer on the 520's, no top's on the 320's
2. Flame/ heartbeat inlays on the 520, dots only on the 320's

In regards to the SZR, you should know that is has a shorter scale length (24.75") than the SZ series (25.1"). The SZR also has a wider neck (58.5mm) than the SZ (57mm) and a thinner profile (about 1mm thinner all the way down the neck.

I'm not sure why anyone would think the 320 would be a "better" guitar than the 520. It may be less expensive to buy used, but it's not a "better" guitar.

That was my understanding as well. (Quilted for 520s, flamed for 720s).

I own an '07 SZ320EX in white.

Re: second hand sz320 or sz520

There is just one question. I read a lot of opinions on the internet.
But is it easy to adjust the action on the guitar?

I read several times that the distance from the fretboard to the strings is a littel bigger ?

Is it an pro That on the guitar are jumbo frets or just not ?

Hope you gyus/girls can answer me.

Thanks again
