Seven string action height

Iv been an Ibanez player for 6 years and very recently purchased my very first 7 string RG1257!! I am a guitar setup fanatic and do all my own setting up and maintenance and fretwork etc.

On my 6 string i go for a tiny bit of relief and an action height of around 1.6mm at the 12th fret.

On my 7 string i cannot seem to get the guitar to play nice with this action. Is it expected that a 7 stringer is going to buzz more? Are you supposed to have a slightly higher bass side action on a 7?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me fellas!!

Re: Seven string action height

Is it only the low string that is buzzing? If so, what gauge of string are you using? Some folks have trouble when using lighter gauges for the low string, in that it's too floppy because it doesn't have the tension a higher gauge string would have. This is especially true if you're using any kind of drop tuning or lower tuning.

Well at the moment i have 9-46 on there with a 62 for the low B. It just came back from a fret level and crown too and i still seem to have to keep the action on the B at about 2mm.

The buzz is on the top 2 strings mainly if i lower it.

Re: Seven string action height

I don't know then, although that's a big jump from .046 to .062. Maybe try a heavier gauge on the low E? In my last post, I mentioned some folks have trouble with lighter gauge strings, but I don't. I'm the same as you with the .009-.046, but I use a .052 for the low B, and I don't have any trouble. Now, I've never measured the action, but it's fairly low.

Re: Seven string action height

THerightjem perhaps you could see what your action height is for me please? I really want to understand this because i really like the idea of having a 7 string guitar. But if i cant get it set up how i like it then i cant see much point

Re: Seven string action height

I'll measure it tonight. There really shouldn't be any reason you can't set a 7 string guitar up the way you like, I wouldn't think.

Re: Seven string action height

Two millimeters is usually about as low as you're going to get on the seventh string. Even with the heavier gauge it still has a much larger ellipse than even the low E string.

Rich's tutorial on guitar cleaning/set up and since he used a seven string, it's applicable to your situation.

He sets them up at about 2.5mm on the bass side and 1.5mm on the treble.

The few I've set up I've used about the same and it seemed the best compromise for tone/playability.

I prefer my six string low E at about 2.5mm, so this always felt very comfortable to me as well... though I'm not a seven string fan myself.

Re: Seven string action height

Excellent find there my friend thankyou! I wander if setting it that high will mean the rest of the strings are actually at the height they would be on a regular 6?

That's old, I set low B around 1.6 now unless somebody gives me specific instructions.

Re: Seven string action height

It's supposed to buzz, it's a big fat string.
