Should I get an RG 2820?

I've found one of these for sale for the equivalent of $850 in good condition. Is it worth it at this price?

Does anyone have any info on this guitar? I can't seem to find any online, other than the fact that it was a limited run instrument. Anyone own one and have any thoughts on them? Are they up to the quality standards of the current line of MIJ Ibanez's?

Re: Should I get an RG 2820?

It's an awesome guitar, great quality, and a delicious neck, with the 42mm width at the nut.
Plays awesome, very low profile bridge, it has a three way pickup switch, and Dimarzio IBZ's pickups, the body is mahogany with quilted maple on top, which sounds warmer than most RG's.
Bottom line; go buy it:-)

I can't believe I don't have one.

Oh, one more question: is this a proper quilted maple top or is it a photo quilt?

I love the pickup switch.
It is like the Petruccis.

Excellent, thanks guys I can't wait to get my hands on this one. I'm thinking of putting a Duncan JB/Jazz set into it, what do you think?

Oh, why is that? What pups would you recommend? This is supposed to end up being a shred and metal guitar

I would load it with DiMarzio's i love Joe's choice, Paf pro and fred but if your looking for something more metal/shred (although they perform perfect for me while playing metal) maybe look into something like d-activators, d sonic or x2n.

Re: Should I get an RG 2820?

What do you think of the Tone Zone / Air Norton combo in a mahogany body? The thing I'm specifically looking for is clarity on the overdrive channel of my amp (ie no muddiness, that makes me sad)

Re: Should I get an RG 2820?

That sounds like you chose to great pick-ups. As a combination there not that good though. the problem you will have is the Output differences

Tone zone Output: 375
Air Norton Output: 270

if your looking for clarity I would also recommend the Fred(output 305). When i compare the pick-ups i have through my tube amp, the Fred really gives the amp clarity and makes a nice punchy and crunchy tone.

Where do you get your gear from here in South Africa. i am currently on holiday here for 2 months and am looking a new bridge and maybe some pickup's

Thanks, Nosi

Re: Should I get an RG 2820?

Great guitar, here's everything I know about it and some pics of mine.

Body: Mahogany body with curly maple top
Neck: 3 pc. maple Ultra neck, all-access neck joint, 25.5" scale
Scale length: 648MM/25.5"
Width at nut: 43MM
Width at last fret: 56MM
Thickness at first fret: 19.5MM
Thickness at 12th fret: 21.5MM
Radius: 430
Fretboard: Rosewood, 24 frets with abalone J.custom vine inlay, Dunlop 6100 jumbo frets
Pickups: (2) Dimarzio/IBZ humbuckers—Dimarzo/IBZ-N (N) & Dimarzio/IBZ-B (B)
Controls: 1 volume, 1 tone, 3-way switch
Finish: Curly Maple, Twilight Blue (TW), White binding on the body
Matching headstock with silver Ibanez logo
Back of body is painted transparent blue
Powder Cosmo hardware
Trem: Edge Pro with locking nut
Other misc. stuff: Non USA model
Production year: 2003
Made in: Japan

I especially like the Ultra neck, it's thicker than a wizard and I think that's good. The pups are ok but not great. My JPM has much better pups and it makes a big difference.

Re: Should I get an RG 2820?

Another thing important is that any Ibanez bridge after the lo-pro/edge does not have the locking studs in the trem posts. so when you take your bridge out you will find that you can shake the studs, where as with locking studs they won't move a hair. if you can find locking studs i suggest you buy them and install them.

Nosi

PS Reinder het is maar fijn dat ik niet weet waar je woont anders zou ik een geweldige gitaar meer hebben :P
