Should I get RG3120? Already have JEM 7DBK.

Hi there,

Just wanna get you guys' opinions. I already have JEM 7DBK and I love it. But I heard so many good things about the RG3120. Also I wanna know if sound from Mahogany would be much different from Basswood. I'm mainly into Metal, Dream Theater, Vai, Satch, Morse, Gilbert, ...

What do you guys think?

Thanks,
AvY

Yes, the sound is WAY different. I went to GC one day, and it was going to be the 7dbk or the 3120. The neck on the dbk was better than the 3120 IMO but the sound on the 3120 killed it. It had a lot more balls to it! Distorted tones were soo thick. I a/b'd them... with the 7dbk, distorted tones were 'nice'. With the 3120 distorted tones were like...'oh SH!T!'. I'd say get one. It sounds thicker. Especially compared to a 7dbk, the breed pups are weak compared to the tone zone pup.

I have to step in and root for my love... the RGT3120, I'm not saying you should get it, but it should be a contender!

... and Rich, you can actually tell I've played this one!!! I gotta get the tooth brush out to clean the fretboard already... but still doesn't have a scratch on her.. and hopefully never will!

I highly recommend the RG3120.

I've had mine for 3 weeks and I can't put it down. I just popped on her 3rd set of strings today.

The Tone Zone can handle anything from clean chords to full on shred.

I played a 3120 and a DBK back to back in shop and I prefer the 3120. I normally only even pick up 7 string guitars, I love em, but the 3120 is such a great guitar I nearly came home with it. Go play them both and see what you think. Mahogany with Tone Zone/PAF combo is just a great sound. More of a classy looking guitar than the DBK if you ask me, really different instruments all together.

Can I just say that you're not going to get an unbiased answer here! There's noone here (I don't think) that will say "don't buy any more Ibanezes"

Seriously, I love both guitars, I'm actually unbiased because I own neither (but I desire both), but they are both fantastically different, great sounding guitars.

Hi, another A/B'er here...
I have to preface this by saying I've owned two 3120's, so I may be biased.
I went to our new GC in Charlotte and played the following;
Jem VWH
Jem DBK
RG3120 (two different ones, actually)
The 3120 was the winner in sound, Hands Down. The DBK, Sorry to those who love it, is definitely not my cup of tea. It sounded weak-weak-weak compared to the other three guitars.
The VWH, I must admit, sounded great. I would still prefer the 3120.
Now, between the 3120's I noticed a little difference. They had two. One a TW w/quilted top and one red w/flamed top. I preferred the sound of the blue. Not sure why.
The only other guitar that came close to sounding as good as the 3120 was an EBMM Petrucci. I loved that thing.

(sorry but my english)

I've a '88 fp Jem and a '98 Rg3120. The Jem is more comfortable but the Rg is muuuuchhh more good sounding ,even unpluged;the difference is great in sound. But the Jem feels and looks great.

What is more important to you affordable or sound quality??

Some peoples ears just prefer different woods. The 3120 is mahogany, and thats one of the key reasons it sounds so much different

I have an RG3120DR and absolutely love it. I just recently picked up a beautiful Jem 7VWH as well. However, I think I may still favor the RG, though I have no intentions of getting rid of the JEM. :P

The difference in sounds is the RG is most definitely a fatter, thick sound while the Jem is a little more on the treble side. I can see the Jem having NO TROUBLE cutting trhough the mix AT ALL. My opinion though is if you're not going to get a Jem 7VWH or 7VSBL, don't bother with the 7D.

hrmm

if you already have a dbk...you cant get anything more out of a RG in my opinion.
for a second guitar you should go with an american strat, its always nice to have that combo of an ibanez/fender.

cheers

I have an RG 3120 and am actually going to buy a Universe pretty soon. So I'm sort of in your situation just backwards. The RG 3120 is awesome! I fact there wasn't a single guitar that could touch it for the same price when I bought it. Yes, there is a big difference between basswood an mahogany. I also have an RG570 that is basswood and it has a lot less lows making it sound not as strong a the RG3120. If you have the money then I would have no reason to say don't get it! It will be a good contrast with your Jem but still have the great Ibanez features!

I'm still wondering if slapping some EVOs or something else in my DBK would give it more balls... no one seems to have done this...
