So I got me an '87 RG

So at the local guitar shop, my dad's friend dropped off an old 1987 RG550 he was selling. It is road-worn, with a finish crack, some nicks, and a few other kinks here and there. But it plays perfectly and was setup by my friend with new strings, and everything checks out. Not to mention the finish is the very elusive heather pearl. Dig it:

It's got an original Edge Tremolo, V1, S1, and V2 pickups, which make this beauty a solid classic. Plus, the finish, while embarrassingly pink, is one of the most rare finishes this guitar ever came in. Sure, it's road-worn, but at only $300, including the case, it's worth it. And of course, the tone is just epic. Happy Valentine's Day to me

So what do you guys think?

Could be a mutt. Does anyone remember Heather Pearl in 1987? The logos on the pickups are pretty rare and early, but not on the 1987 catalog photos anywhere. I think I saw those on '89 guitars, which I think is also the year the HP finish showed up in print. What's the serial number? And what does the neckplate look like?

The neckplate is worn to hell, sadly However, the serial number is perfectly in tact. I'll be going to Guitar Center to pick up a better case for it, and when I get back, I'll post that info, to verify it's worth.

While that is a great find at an awesome price, I too think it is a mutt--if it does have an 87 serial number. This color was only offered in 89. Great score either way!

Do you have a serial number on your neck plate?

Is that pickguard stock? Ibanez usually used black pickguards rather than white. Ibanez could stand to use white pickguards more often, I think.
I'd change those rusty pickup screws too before they become troublesome to back out.
Sweet guitar, though!
EDIT: I guess BenoA's answered my question. Also a nice guitar!

the bridge pup is a DiMarzio, not an V2. Maybe a Tone Zone??

Re: So I got me an '87 RG

I'm not sure, but I was wondering that too. The guy who sold it to me said the "V2" wording rubbed off over time, but I doubt it. However, I could care less. The tone is ****ing ridiculous. Probably THE best bridge tone I've heard, next to the Crunch Lab. Also, the serial number is F763734

Also BenoA, that's sick! Your fretboard is by far much cleaner than mine. Is steel wool really safe to use on such a classic guitar?

Re: So I got me an '87 RG

Definitely not a V2!
If the tone is truly ****ing ridiculously good it's probably a Tone Zone.
But I'm biased...
Or maybe.... maybe it's an EVH. A longshot though. Whatever it is doens't look f-spaced.
Next string change unscrew the pickguard and lean it out to take a look. Inquiring minds want to know.

Re: So I got me an '87 RG

Good eye on the F spacing, you might be right. Could just be the angle too.

Re: So I got me an '87 RG

Serial numbers were not on the neckplates for 550-they are on the back of headstock. The white pickguard is stock on the HP, and I think th AB and other colors.
