Some Confusion about my 1989 RG760s, any help appreciated

Hello fellow Ibaheads,

I have two 1989 RG760s (confirmed by standard serial numbers), both of which have the Bensalem, PA neckplates. One is the dark gray color they came in, and the other is in jewel blue. The dark gray one I bought brand new in 1990, the jewel blue from a pawn shop here in town. I have the original documentation for both guitars that shows them to be RG760s, and the colors definitely match what was available in 1989 (per catalogs on Ibanez Rules) and I figure since they're both 1989 RG760's they should be identical, right? Right, with one major exception.

The scallop for the heel joint is drastically different on my DG vs. the JB. The DG has what I consider to be the classic 80's "square heel" as pictured here (not my actual guitar) but notice how the scallop on the back of the guitar just going to the other side of the neck

http://www.guitar-museum.com/guitar-...0-in-Condition

The carve on the JB however, is scalloped all the way across to the other horn as seen here: (again, not my actual guitar, sorry for the stock photos). This is the ONLY example of this carve I can find on the net of a 760 where the carve looks the same as my RG760JB

My question is, since these guitars should be identical, can anyone tell me why there's the difference in the carve?

Any help would be appreciated. Ok, still don't have my ten posts, so can't post links. Looks like I'm going to have to reply to myself 4 times so you guys can see the images.

The first one definitely is the 'regular' neck joint for a pre-1994 RG model, the so-called 'Tilt Joint'. The other one has the 'Cutaway Heel' also featured on most pre-1993 JEM models.

It's very hard to get some hard figures on this, but I do know that some RG700 series models (or even more) did get a cutaway heel, maybe even when they actually shouldn't have (production 'mistake'?). The only one I ever saw pictured in an Ibanez catalog with such a neck joint is a RG770 Paisley (in the 1990 and 1991 Japanese catalog. Maybe it's something that originally only was featured on Japanese market models.

The DG one appears to have the cut of a 560; it's identical to my '91 550.

I have to agree with the above statement though; my '91 550 and '89 760DG have similar cutaways which is also similar to my friend's '90 570. At the same time, i thought the 770DX's had tilt-back heels IIRC...
In this sense, the tilt-back heels ARE 5xx bodies?

Yeah its the jem neck joint as far as i can tell. Im not sure that I ever really noticed it on a great deal of guitars, but these are the golden age of ibanez instruments and their are some subtle variations from model to model that make them quite unique and special as well. Id love a mint 760 in dark grey with the jem neck joint

I have 2 89' USA Customs both "Music of the Sphere" graphics one is Reverse head/Sharktooth with the JEM neck joint F serial # on back of head with blank Bensalem PA plate. Graphic only on front.

and then I have
89' USA Custom with serial # stamped on Bensalem PA neckplate but graphic front and back with the tilt-joint neck joint it also is heavier in weight.
