Split in neck - resolved!

I bought a new RG421 Saturday. I was wiping it down today
and discovered a hairline split in the back of the neck. It's
about 3 inches down from the head and runs about an inch
or slightly more down the neck...large enough that it's obvious.
although I didn't see it when I put the guitar on lay-a-way. Is
it enough to be concerned about?? A sign of worse to come?

Dealer accepted the RG421 back without any problems..very
easy to work with. They said it looked like the wood had dried
and that caused the split. I traded it in for a SZ520 and only
had to pay a very few dollars more. Hate to lose that 421 though.

Could you post a picture? We really need one to determine the severity of the crack

Nah, don't have a picture .....

it's wide enough that I could easily get a knife blade in not too
deep. It's on the back center of the neck. Starts about an inch
above the nut and runs down about an inch and a half to two inches down. Looks like it's waiting to split. Plus it doesn't want to stay
in tune. Don't know if that could be related or not.

If I was you i would return it, cause it sounds like a pretty bad crack, even if it is just the paint.

Simply on a new guitar,That is not acceptable, take it back and get them to A,order a replacment B,get a replacement Neck from Ibanez, that'll cost them a fortune C,get a refund and have a look on eBay for a rg550 etc

Do not ponder it,Just take it back and moan,I most definately would

HTH

have you tightened the nut at all? sounds like a split caused by overtightening of the bolts at the back of the nut.

Took it back to dealer...

I took the 421 back to the dealer today. He said it looks
like the wood dried and split. Anyway they took it back on
a trade and will return it to Ibanez. I traded for a blue SZ520
for just a few dollars more. The dealer was very good to work
with.
