String Size

What size strings do you all use for your RGs? I play lead metal and currently use 11-49s on my fixed bridge ESPs. A friend of mine, and very accomplished player, uses 9-42s on his Jem. Should I consider going to a 10-46?

Nah, use whatever feels right for you. You can use the same string guage on your RG as you do on your ESP. You just may need to throw in an extra spring or two to get the bridge to sit level.

Someone told me that using 11-48s could warp the neck of the thin RG. Has anyone had problems like this, should I not do it?

Sounds like they're not a fan of Ibanez. That's a big myth going around about Ibanez guitars, that the necks are so thin they warp or snap. I've never heard of it happening, and I'm around this forum a lot, so you'd think someone here would have mentioned it, seeing as how there's people on here with way more experience than me

Well, if you plan on tuning to concert pitch (A440) then 11's will test the strength of your trussrod if the neck is a wizard.
On a super wizard (bubinga stripe) you won't have to tighten the trussrod as much but it'll still be tight.

If you are like 99% of the people who play 11's - i.e. tune down to at least Eb or even to D - 11's won't be a problem at all.

Exactly; it's all about balancing the tension in the strings, neck and trem.

I wouldn't recomend 11's in standard pitch on a Wizard neck and the guitar guys I've talked to at Hoshino tell you the same thing. Too much tension on too thin a piece of wood.

I just recently swapped from 0.9 to 0.10 and couldn't hear a difference. I just happen to have a more stable trem though since I use 4 springs now....

Maybe I'll turn it back later......I'm a shred type of guy and Ibanez already uses a 25,5 scale so more string tension then 0.9 just isn't needed I guess. Kinda hate to setup my guitar again while string changing again....just don't feel like that....

And hell......since Satch and Joe also use 0.9 I'd better swap back I guess :P

that always happens to me. i switch to a heavier gauge and i hear about how one of my fav. shredders uses like 8's or 9's so i gotta go back down again but its a pain setting all that **** up. oh well its worth it.

Yeah all of my favs use 0.9 or 0.8.........I happen to feel it's a bit harder pulling off and hammering on with 0.10
Just bought 2 sets of D'darrio 0.9 strings again. As soon as my old strings break I'm gonna swap them.....back to 0.9 again.....hello shred world here I come

Hate to have to go trough the whole tremolo set-up and neck setup thing again though......well.....this is the last time I switch.......
Gotta take it easy on the neck......think I'm gonna swap them one by one and then adjust the neck in small steps. That way the neck will get used to the new strings better.

I've flipped between ernie balls and di'addario a few times in the best, but at the moment I'm a di'addario custom Guage 10 - 52 (or to you Ernie ball lovers, Slinky Top/Heavy Bottom).

The Tens arn't perfect for bending and such, but they provide good string life, and the lower bottom strings provide longer life for the double picked stuff.
