Strings buzzing when not touching them...

...on my RGA121. specifically the A and low E strings. i'll pluck the 3 highest strings and they hum slightly, making high clean licks with distortion impossible.

i got it professionally set up, i don't think it was doing this before i got it set up for 10's...there's also slight fret buzz on the low e string, should i just go back to 9's or does the problem lie within the set up?

EDIT: He also had to cut out a little of the nut to put the 10's in. could that be the problem?

From your description it's not clear what the problem is, but obviously there is one, take it back to the guy that set it up, get him to sort it out and don't use him again !!!

Re: Strings buzzing when not touching them...

if you mean that the strings buzz only on open strings it is down to;

Nut slots cut too deep or nut not shimmed high enough - make the nut higher, i have no experience of doing this on none locking nuts.

Neck bowing the wrong way due to bad truss adjustment, but this would also cause problems on the other lower frets, not just open strings.

Take it back to him or better yet, use the internet to learn how to do setups yourself - its very easy, u just have to be patient.

Re: Strings buzzing when not touching them...

Sounds like sympathetic vibration due to either body vibration or harmonic overtones. The lighter the gauge, the more you'll get. You could always try lifting your pickups slightly to see if the increased field damps the vibration, but you'll lose sustain.

Slight fret buzz isn't the end of the world if only at the lowest couple of frets and if it's not sounding through the amp it shouldn't really be a problem. Raise the action slightly in need.

Honestly it just sounds like it's been set up for a light touch rather than a total disaster of a job.
