SV5470F - How Stable?

Hi Guys,
After a good few years with an S270 I'd had enough fiddling about with the Floyd Rose trem. I'm not a big dive bomb adict or a heavy trem user but it's nice to drop a little bit of wangy bar in now and again. I did a lot of research on a non locking alternative and settled on the SV5470F.

I bought a brand new one a couple of months ago which arrived as you might expect needing some work on the set up so I had this professioanlly done.
Must admit though I'm a tad disappointed with the tuning stability. A few semi dives and a few pulls on the bar and the tuning goes out enough to be noticeable (particularly plain strings G,B,E). It doesn't seem much better than my old late 70's Strat!

Of course I didn't expect the super stability a modern locking trem but the press and the hype led me to think this guitar would be close.

Anybody got any suggestions/tips to try and improve it?

Cheers,
Andy

Re: SV5470F - How Stable?

Hey Andy, the tuning's going out because the strings are catching slightly as they slide through the nut. Either shell out on some "nut lube" or something and apply it on the grooves in the nut, or opt for the cheap option which is probably equally effective: just rub a pencil (softer the better) through each groove. The cheap ones that you press like a pen to lengthen the lead are good 'cos they're thin enough to get in the higher string grooves. It's the graphite in the lead that helps reduce the friction. Good luck! Lovely guitar btw!

Re: SV5470F - How Stable?

Hi Neil,
I've never heard of nut lube but I'll have a search for a soft pencil tonight and give it a go!
Maybe it's why it's only affecting the non wirewound strings because they move in the nut whereas friction holds the wirewound ones in position.

If I can crack this I can start to love the guitar!

Cheers,
Andy

In theory I gues they shouldn't move but without a locking nut the strings will move through the nut it to some greater or lesser extent when you use the trem.
The pencil lead definitely made a big difference - I was surprised how much. It still goes out a little bit but a few pulls back on the bar seems to get it back to a decent level of tune.
If I get a really soft pencil or the lube maybe it would get even better.

I could have sworn in the literature it was supposed to have a "graphite nut" but obvioulsy this in itself is not enough.

A lot happier now!

Cheers again,
Andy
