SZ520 - Removing Gloss on Neck

What is the best way to do this? The neck is too sticky. I want it faster.

Re: SZ520 - Removing Gloss on Neck

Thanks. I looked at that, but the necks on the SZ guitars are painted so I'm not trying to get down to bare wood. I just don't want it sticky.

Maybe the same process still applies? Sand lightly and finish with steel wool?

Re: SZ520 - Removing Gloss on Neck

Yeah, tape it off where you want the "satin" part to begin and end, and sand it with 320-400 grit. If you want to finish off with 0000 steel wool you can, but try it with just the sandpaper first.

I would wetsand it, so you get a more uniform satin pattern, and have less chance to dig in anywhere. If you don't understand wetsanding, search project guitar or whatever to familiarize yourself. It will allow you to get right up to the tape line without visible "scratch lines".

Be carefull of the paper grading. Euro or [P grade] is allot different than Cami grade. P320 is about regular 2209, which you do not want to use on painted finish. I wouldn't use anything more agressive than regular 600 [near P1200].

Re: SZ520 - Removing Gloss on Neck

Good point. But a 600 grit wetsand will buff up pretty quickly just from normal play. If you are wetsanding, it's kind of like going up one grit level. So 320 grit dry could strip a neck in a reasonable amount of time. But wet, it will slide over the surface. The grit becomes a question of "how satiny do you want it?"
