Was there an RG770 with all-access neck joint in '89????

Ok kids,

I am trying to verify that a particular guitar is what someone SAYS it is. They CLAIM that it is a 1989 (Serial number F974134 RG770 that they bought second hand from Guitar Center in 2000. It APPEARS to be Metallic Green in color. The thing is, I am pretty sure the pickups aren't stock, it has the AANJ and also says "RG Series" on the metallic green headstock. My first thought is that this is a post 1994 neck from some other guitar smacked onto some other guitar body. The pickups are direct mounted into the body in H-S-H configuration. It is boggling my mind what this sucker is. Anyone have a clue?

Later,
Jeff

Ibanez introduced the AANJ in the early '90s. The guitar you're interested in is a '97.

Is the fretboard bound rosewood? Inlays? RG770s had clear guard with direct mounted pickups IIRC... Hope that helps.

If this is the same guitar that's on eBay, it is in fact an RG770 - not a 270. The Edge trem gives it away. Looks like a cool guitar - if you like sharktoof inlays. RG770s had the inlays as seen in the picture and the rest of the setup is pure 770, right down to the original Edge trem. I guess these were only available in Japan in the late 90s, but I can't verify that...

I think 270s also have ring-mounted pickups and dot inlays.

I'd actually say if it's the same one I've seen on ebay, it's an RG570LTD, not an RG770. I could be wrong though, but I've never seen documentation of an RG770 produced in the period from about 1994 to 2000. Someone give me a bell if we need to start posting links and I'll move this over to the Auction/Reseller talk section

Yes the RG550LTD had a pickguard, but the RG570LTD didn't!!!

I've also heard folks say (but never had it substantiated) that they were part of a limited run for Guitar Center?!?!? I've seen them in a black colour and this green.

RG570LTD, duh. I must have read that REAL fast.

That's probably the best bet as to what this is. RG770s were made in Japan in late 90s, but I've never seen one with direct mounted pickups, or an AANJ.

If it's a Guitar Center limited run, that makes it somewhat scarce and collectable. Kinda like the GREEN RG7620 on eBay currently
