Think I know what I'll do with my RG570 body

All I should need to do is the burst and reclear.

Nah, I'd leave the single coil since it already has the flamed maple top. I'll also go with a black tremelo and knobs. My neck is also maple.

how thick is the top on your 570? substantial or just a veneer?

you have to mighty careful sanding veneers.

It's just a veneer, but the only sanding I'm planning is to wet sand the current finish. I won't be breaking through the clear coat but simply painting on top of what is already there. As the current color of the guitar is nearly the same color, all I'll be doing is adding the burst colors to the current finish.
