Re: The "Thinking Mans" Les Paul

Theres no doubt that PRS robbed his shape from the Gibson range - afterall he started off making Gibson style copies

Anyway........... Just sold the one on the left actually - the one without the neck crack

My solicitor friend just called by to have his Ibanez GB looked at and he saw that and has been after an SG as an alternative to the unplayable Les Paul Standard (single cut)

He spotted the double cut, had a quick play and was back the next day to collect it!

I gigged with my double cut last Saturday night and it was great

I'll use my quilted Jem this week - for a comparison

Introducing the Les Paul Standard - Double Cut!

Been after one (two!) for a while now............

These things (to me) address all the bad LP points. The double cut has :

- Easy upper fret access
- 24 frets
- Decent tuners
- Chambered body - less weight
- Great looking flame top
- Simple control layout

None of which a normal Les Paul has
Aside from having the same tuners as a regular Les Paul, the fact that this year regular Les Pauls are chambered instead of weight relieved, the Standards have flame tops and personally I like having separate volume controls and dont get confused by the extra 2 knobs you make interesting points. I had one for a few months and got rid of it. To me it's a Les Paul in name only. It doesn thave the looks, sound or features of what Les Paul was going for.

Re: The "Thinking Mans" Les Paul

Nice tops with a sweet flame. Congrats!

I like the fact that they are one of the few 24 fret offerings from Gibson. One of my favorite Gibsons next to an Explorer and those would be my choice over an LP anyday if.............

I didn't have one of these

It doesn't have 24 frets but stock Duncans (JB/'59), a THICK maple top, one piece mahogany back and one of the nicest neck shapes I have ever had my hands on. It is a '96 Hamer USA Special FM and they are not even close to the design used by Hamer (neck shape, body carve and lack of binding) for the new ones. I believe the new ones run about $2200 street price nowadays

This one is a keeper as is both of yours I'm sure

and thats a good thing.........

The strat and Les paul were both designed in the fifties......... and it sure shows.......

The Strat has been far excelled by a myriad of "super-strats" - Ibanez being but one of them

And the Les Paul far excelled by the likes of the PRS, Hamer etc........

Can't for the life of me understand why people want to play such an old relic - apart from being sheep! Baaaa

Would you still ride round in a car deisigned in the 50's??????
Or watch TV on a 10" black and white set from the 50's??????

Re: The "Thinking Mans" Les Paul

Thats one way to look at it, the other is they must have done something right to not need to change the design in 50 years and still outsell and be copied by everyone else.
If it's not broke, dont fix it.

Sorry Max, but the strat is still king. I love my Ibanez, but if I could have one guitar, it would be a strat.

Re: The "Thinking Mans" Les Paul

Nice. The thing that sucks is that Gibson stopped making them with 24 frets in the fall of last year. Now, they've only got the Les Paul DC Pro, which only has 22 frets.
