Arrow Tone Zone vs. EMG 85

I have a TZ in the bridge of my Ibanez, and I've been pretty much set on throwing some EMG's in it. The body is mahogany, and the TZ has no cut whatsoever. It's all bottom end, and has no crunch. So, with the 85 being a fat sounding pickup (am I right about this???), would it sound super dark and muddy in the Ibanez or what??? Does it have any "crunch" to it? Also, what's good in the neck as far as EMG's are concerned?

Werd.

Re: Tone Zone vs. EMG 85

Id do 85 neck and 81 or 89 bridge. That should work fine.

Re: Tone Zone vs. EMG 85

I have an 85 in the bridge of my mahogany S470DXQM and it totally slays all

Especially for metal (duh) Bodom, Shadows Fall, etc, its covered.

As far as cutting, oh it cuts, it cuts plenty...
Crunch makes me think passive pups for some reason, but anyhow, the 85 definately sounds full, but not exactly fat. EMGs are all about that "tight power". As far as the neck goes, I use the 89, which can be used in either hum or single mode, and that in itself is pricelss. In summation, great tones from each, and a very unconventional EMG setup.

Re: Tone Zone vs. EMG 85

Thanks for the replys dudes. The Tone Zone is a pretty powerful pickup, but it's way too bassy. I think I'll take the plunge and go for the 85/89 combo. Sonata, I agree with you about the whole thing about passives being associated with crunch.

Re: Tone Zone vs. EMG 85

I totally love the 85 in the bridge AND the neck position. In the bridge it's just kickass and it cuts with ease without every being muddy and in the neck it's smooth yet warm and full bodied. I've heard that the EMG 89 is like an 85 in humbucker mode and an SA in single coil mode. If that's true then it would be the ultimate pickup (for both neck and bridge).

Re: Tone Zone vs. EMG 85

81 blows the 85 outa the bridge and into the water!

All depends what sound you want obviously. 81 is so ****in mean it kicks your ears asses, and I didn't even know your ears had an ass before I played an 81.
