Unknown Ibanez Gio with P90 pickups! Can anyone help?

Hi,
I recently acquired an Ibanez Gio recently with P90 pickups because it was unusual for a GIO model to have P90 pickups. As it turns out, it is impossible to find any info or model number for this guitar?!

I've contacted IbanezWiki, Ibanez USA, local guitar forum, visited every website about Ibanez guitars, looked at every Ibanez catalogue from 2000 onwards and opened every single picture of every single GIO model ever made that I could find (around 170-180).

I've also looked for "spot models" of Ibanez guitars. No luck.

I know it is not of vital importance that I know the model and have some info, it's still a nice guitar and plays well, but it still bugs me immensely. So, if anyone know what it is, PLEASE let me know. Thank you.

You probably spent hours searching when it would take 10 minutes to take the neck off and see what the body stamp is.

It looks like an ARX model, the P90's may not be original. it may have come with terrible Chinesium humbuckers when new, the big soap bars could be covering the screw holes.

It's a Chibanez, serial suggests 2007 which is right in the wheelhouse of the defunct ARX line.

It should be marked in the neck pocket and on the heel.

Yes, I actually spent days searching, as described in my original post. For the record, I have taken off the neck and herewith the image. Maybe it helps you figure out what it is?! Any meaningful contribution?!

Re: Unknown Ibanez Gio with P90 pickups! Can anyone help?

Looks to me more like some weird model of GSZ. Shape of the body and headstock matches. Specs not so much.

GSZ220FM was a spot model that had flamed maple top but never seen one in this colour. GSZ220A had more classic SZ arched top but didn't have flamed maple top.

P90s are most likely swap, especially if they're decent pickups.

I'll remember not to say that about GIO's again.

And Chinese/Korean Ibanezes rarely have model stamped in the neck joint. Sometimes you can find a sticker with model name in electronics compartment or under the pickup.

But this is probably some spot model and as Chinese Ibanezes don't have a much following it's gonna be super hard to track exactly what's the model name.

It is similar to some guitars in the ARX series but the body is different, it is flat and not arched. I have the ARX300 (Korea) as well as SC420 (Japan) and JTK2 (Indonesia), and when I compare the workmanship and quality of production, it is not inferior at all. Might be a bit confusing for some since it was made in China. I have not taken out the pickups yet but they do seem original and the wiring is untouched.

Dude, do you seriously expect a Gio to get a carved archtop?

Gravure flame on a flattie with ivoroid binding to conceal the shame.

I have a couple of Chinese guitars, a custom Ibanez Artcore and an Epiphone Iommi SG and they are both fantastic, however neither of them were cheap when new. I also have an unnatural hankering for an Eastwood Surfcaster.

Re: Unknown Ibanez Gio with P90 pickups! Can anyone help?

mlusiak,
It could be a weird spot model although when I searched for spot models I didn't find anything that looks like this. There is no stickers in the electronics compartments but I will have to take the pickups out and check the markings on them. Should have done it already but ran out of patience. Thank you for your input.

FireEagle,
Thanks for the link. I have seen it but even with Google translate couldn't figure out if there's any useful info there. I did send them a message, in English, but had no reply yet. So far, after 5-6 days of endless hours on the internet, those are the ONLY images I have found of this guitar.

I also contacted Ibanez Wiki FANDOM and they don't know what model this is. Yet! Maybe someone will come up with an answer. Here is an extract from their message: "I'll do some research and check out the links you provided. If I can establish what this model is I'll try to get it added to the wiki."

Thanks guys.
