USRG inlays - Ok, I've said it before, but ...

Ok, I used to think the inlays were plastic, now I know they're pearl, but I still think they look a little plain. My question is: has anyone ever redone the inlays on their USRG? I'm seriously thinking about doing it, and I want to know what you guys think. My idea is to do a vine inlay, like that JCRG (5?) *and I think that would look just great. It's not out of my means, all it would cost me is the materials, so it wouldn't be a major investment. I'm apprenticing for a luthier, and this is something I want to do in the next year or two. Just want to see what everyone thinks. Thanks, in advance.

I would, too I guess what I'm looking for mostly, is maybe suggestions or advice on what would look the best, or would be more practical or tasteful. If, for some unfortunate reason, I have to unload it down the road, would having a vine inlay hinder a sale:sarcasm: ? I can't foresee it, but it doesn't hurt to know what ya'll think.

My personal feeling on it is that if it is done right it can only add to the value of the guitar. Sure your going to run up against a purest somewhere but on todays mass market there is somebody for everything.

You might want to try Here for the Materials!

Ultimatly what ever you do , just do it because thats the way you want it to look. You'll end up much more satisfied than trying to do what somebody suggest's and then have to live with it.

Thanks for the link. I agree with you, and in the end, I'm going to do only what I like best. I'm just kind of testing the waters on what I could do with it. I'm somewhat new at working at inlay, but I've got enough experience with other art forms to know that *planning* and preparation is 90% of the success of the finished product. Instead of ramlbing incessantly here, (I could do very easily) I'm going to just get my butt in gear, and start puttering around with some designs. Got any idea where I could get a tracing or pattern of the Jem vine? Just as a reference point? Thanks, again.
