Vintage S470?

Hi everyone.
I have an older S470 that was given to me by a friend approximately 18 years ago.
He had dropped it resulting in a good sized chip on the back of the body.
He completely refinished the guitar, doing a fantastic job. During the process, however, he sanded the serial number of the back of the head stock. No big deal as far as I'm concerned.
Having said that, I'm still trying to find out more about it as I've never seen another S470 quite like this one. It has a 4 bolt neck with a rectangular neck plate.
It has shark tooth inlays on the fretboard with an additional inlay that says custom made between the 20th and 21st frets.
It has IBZUSA pickups.

Anyone out there have any ideas?

Thanks.

Bill

Re: Vintage S470?

What bridge does it have, that sounds like a 540, not a 470.

Re: Vintage S470?

Can you post a picture? AFAIK the 470 never had the Custom Made inlay.

Sounds like an S540LTD to me. I donít think any other S had the double sharktooths. Pics would definitely help.

When trying to add a picture, I get a message saying that I've exceeded my quota by 417mb. Same thing happens after cropping the picture.

I believe you have to have 10 posts here before you can add an image. Might be easiest to just upload it to an image hosting site, or Instagram and just post the link here.

Should be 540S LTD, 1991-1992. Lo Pro without AANJ.

Re: Vintage S470?

Definitely an S540LTD - though Iíve not seen that particular finish on one. Itís closest to the SOL (stained oil) finish, but Iíve never seen it that dark before. Maybe itís a European or Asia market only finish? Regardless, theyíre great guitars!

I refinished it last year.
It had a prior refinish job done by the person who gave it to me.
It was originally black.
He dropped which took a pretty good chunk out of it.
Stripped the body down to the bare Mahagony, dyed it with green food coloring, and then finished off with several coats of lacquer.
Came out to a beautiful emerald green.
I got the guitar in 1999 or 2000.

Over the years, the color on the front faded to a full brownish green.
I stripped the body back down, leaving some green highlights in the grain, then applied some blue guitar body dye.

Topped it off with 5 or 6 coats of tung oil.

In my first post I mentioned that the guitar has IBZ/USA pups.
The middle one is indeed an IBZ/USA C3.

The neck pup is a DiMarzio DP103.
The bridge pup is a DiMarzio DP151.

Is it possible that the guitar came from the factory that way, or were they added by the original owner? If the original pups were swapped out, I'm thinking I'd like to grab an F1 for the neck postion and an F2 for the bridge to bring the guitar back to stock.

Any opinions on the sound quality between the DP's and the F's ?
