What to do to customize my new rg550

Hi. I am looking to customize my black w/black pickguard rg550 that i just bought off the bay....barring unforeseen circumstances. Anyway, does anybody here know what is a good paint to use on a guitar...I was thinking a bunch of coats of yellow rustoleum with a lot of clearcoat...but is there anything cheap that is better....I saw the cool pickup-coloring stickerthingys, and i was wondering where to get replacement knobs in yellow....also for a reasonable price. Any other ideas or suggestions on what i should do to mod this out should be posted and would be greatly appreciated. Also, all this is keeping in mind that i don't want to switch the pickups, ill have to go to plan B if i decide i don't like the pups or if there are electrical problems. Thanks a lot. Neal

what about this? Have someone remove the clearcoat of the front of the body, glue a RG shaped aluminium paper on it, then clearcoat over! "Chrome" top for cheap

I wouldnt refinish the body if I were you, unless it is insanely chipped! Just go for a replacement pickguard, coloured pickup covers, flashy knobs and you're done. Dont spend hundreds on it since you have to save for a JEM!

Im having a thought.

yellow truss cover, black knobs, pickups and switch, Yellow Pickguard, black everything else.

It would look like a bee!

I think it would be easier cheaper, and make the guitar look better if i did it in reverse....because its got a lot of nicks and scratches......yellow body, black pickguard, yellow knobs and pickup covers, yellow headstock, black truss cover, and etc....what could i do to make it a little more personal? I was thinking put a chrome detail kit on it, but chrome and yellow isn't the best combination. What about other neon colors....pink, purple, green etc. Any suggestions?

Honestly, I would leave it alone for 2 main reasons...

1) Resell value
2) It doesn't cost any money NOT to do anything to it

If you must get the finish redone, then I suggest having a professional do it for you.

I have considered leaving it alone, but the entirely black color scheme will look pretty boring. I have been looking around and i really like the bright yellow look, and i think i'm going to paint the body and then just get some pickup covers and knobs....seems pretty easy....if i can get the painting done well. About how much would a paintjob set me back?

Naa, go ahead and try the refinish. I've done a couple of guitars. It's not easy as just painting though--if you want to get it shiny it takes a perfect start--filler, sanding, sand and sealer and after you finish painting you will need to sand and have it buffed with a buffing machine.

Try reranch's site for paints and lots of advice---search for "reranch 101"

Good luck, Rob
