What have I just purchased?

I just bought an RG second hand. I know its Serial number is F0233***, which means its either a 1990 or a 2002...I think.

The neck says made in japan, has no volute on it. The guitar has V7 and V8 HH pickups, and the tremolo is an original edge (Took it out of the guitar while I'm setting it up, it has EDGE on the tremolo block)

The neck has one skunk stripe ending before the headstock, AANJ, Fender style knobs on the volume and tone controls (1 volume one tone, 3 way blade switch), black pickguard, side mounted body jack.

The logo just says Ibanez RG series.

The guitar has a few dings in it, but considering it has an original edge and possibly a Wizard I, I'm totally ok with that, even if I were to part it out. (THe original owner must have had it for years and never used the trem, since it didn't have a trem bar with it, and there was a repair docket in the case from a place he'd taken it to have the strings changed.)

But i'm not sure what model it is...anyone who can help? It's finished in Silver, if that helps.

Re: What have I just purchased?

Did you get that from Johnny Roadhouse in Manchester? I was thinking of buying that guitar!

It's an RG550EX with an aftermarket pickguard and the single coil removed

Re: What have I just purchased?

AANJ means it's not a 1990. Must be 2002.

Looks like the Prestige Series RG1550 with a changed scratchplate to remove the middle single coil to me....

Ahh, awesome. I got it from Cash Generators in stockport... someone must have bought and sold it back. 250 for this, with case. Aint bad in my book!

Re: What have I just purchased?

I think once it gets a trem bar this might just end up being my main axe for quite a while. My S2170 just got an evo set, and I do love the ZR, but this has a charm all its own, mediocre pickups or not.

Re: What have I just purchased?

Wow, that was up at 400 in Johnny Roadhouse and I was waiting to see if they'd come down a bit (since I like having a single coil) but next time I'd gone someone had taken it. Whoever it was obviously took a hit because they'll of probably only got 100 from Cash Generator if they were lucky!

I bought one off of the net not long after and they're really tasty, but I got rid because I struggled with those necks at the time.

Either way, it'll serve you well, those mirrored dots look great

Silver Sand (SD) is a nice finish to complement those, but the Pup/scratchplate-mod doesn't work for me, a waste of a perfectly decent RG

Re: What have I just purchased?

I'd change the scratchplate back if I didn't think a middle single would get in the way. I have a set of HSH From my S2170 that I could put in, but if I'm honest I like the sound of these pups, it just needs shielding, since the new scratchplate seems to be letting a lot of noise through.

If nothing else I could certainly scrounge up some reflective covering or something for the scratchplate, to give it some 'wow' factor.

Re: What have I just purchased?

If my memory serves correct, some other guy on here took a single coil casing, cut the top off and stuck it to the scratchplate in between the humbuckers. It looked great!

Re: What have I just purchased?

Haha, nice thinking batman. I'm happy with the 2 hum look though, its the blackness of the pickguard that i'd be changing, for something shiny or maybe silver also.

I tell you what'd be pretty cool, getting one of those glow guards
