What les paul is this

My buddy has a nice les paul he let me borrow and here are the specs. The serial number is, 02543584, and it has the number 64 written in black magic marker or a sharpie on the back of the headtstock between the tuning keys, which ive been told may mean its a custom shop guitar. It has a silver finish, which is glossy not flat, like the new studio platinum, the headstock is also black instead of silver, with stock grover tuners an ebony fretboard and trapezoid inlays. The pickguard appears to be brushed aluminum as do all the cavity covers in the back, the original pickups have been removed however and exchanged for an emg zakk wylde set. Any ideal what model this guitar is? I have pictures if someone will post them for me

I highly doubt the Custom Shop brands their instruments with a Sharpie. All Custom Shop's I've seen/owned had the Custom Shop logo on the headstock, cleared over. Does it have body/neck binding? Is the Gibson logo inlayed or gold paint. It's definatly a 2003. Sounds like a Studio to me. But the "64" does not sound like a Custom Shop at all...

Well dont the first two numbers in the serial number reflect the model year? That would mean 02? It was bought early last year in a pawn shop in colorado, used of course, before my buddy was shipped to iraq. Ive been to gibsons website and it isnt any of the les pauls i can see for the last three years so im thinking limited edition. IT doesnt have body or neck binding, but it doesnt feel like a studio you know what i mean? have studios *ever* had an ebony fretboard? Of course im not a les paul guy so who knows. If it was an rg i would have been like *blah blah blahb lahb blah ask rich*

In the 80's and 90's, the serial was YDDDY, with a Jan 11 '85 being 80115xxx. I have no idea what you've got there, though. Sounds cool. Could you send me a pic? I might be able to host them for you if they're few and small

ITs sort of that color and pickguard two of the local shops have that guitar. Teh one my friend has, has a more glitter finish with a gloss coat, instead of flat looking like that one. It also has a black headstock, instead of gray, with chrome truss rod cover, an ebony fretboard, and trapezoid mother of pearl inlays.

Weird...

Is there any chance it's a refinished guitar (since the pickups are replaced too, it seems a custom finish could be possible) which would explain the number on the headstock possibly being from whoever refinished it?

Like was stated earlier, 1st and 5th numbers state the year. And as far as Studio's with ebony fretboarrds, yes they came with them. Eearly 90's Studio's had ebony and some of the newer ones do to. If there is no binding, I'd bet on a Studio. I'd also say it's been refined. What finish is on the back of the neck? If it was a "Limited Edition" it would have that logo on the back of the headstock., like my 1999 Classic in Cinimonburst. You can always call Gibson (1-800-4GIBSON) and they can do a serrial number search...

Im positive its not a refin. The closest i can get though is its had a nice coat of clear added, and inlays, if it is a studio but ill call gibson when i get off work and see what i can find. The guitar is near mint, it seems, so a refin seems unlikely, ive never seen a refin this good on a les paul

Sounds like a sparkle finish to mehttp://www.gibson.com/products/gibso...ndardsp00.htmlor maybehttp://www.gibson.com/products/gibso...tandardsp.htmlfretboards are rosewood and there are no pickguards but they were made from 2000-'03. Could be the fret board was replaced and pickguard was added later? Any ways look at the diamond and the sterling finishes.

The word is out it appears to be a limited edition made for venemans music emporium. More news to follow, but its apparently just a standard.

If it's a Standard, it would be the first Standard I've ever saw without body and neck binding. A one-off made for a dealer sounds quite possible. My Classic was one of those...
