What upgrade can be done to the RG655?

Many of us cannot afford a Japanese Jem, so our best next option is a Prestige. Besides buying the guitar from a guy like Rich, what else can be done to the RG655 to make it more Jem like or at least a better instrument. The RG655 costs $1200. Putting some Evolution pickups would be the first choice. They cost $215.

The main thing would be to get a decent setup on it to make it play as well as possible.

Pickups will alter the sound to be more like a JEM so that's a good step.

You can then get the fretboard replaced to have one with a vine or pyramid inlay. In fact, JEM necks are a little thicker than RG necks, so you could probably get a luthier to make one from scratch for you.

The rout the body for a handle and lion's claw, and send it for a refinish in the colour of your choice. Maybe get a custom body made in alder like the white Japanese JEM...

Seriously though. If you get a 655 in a colour you like. You don't need any modifications, you just need it setting up right.

what Jono said... good setup is really everything you need. If you really want a JEM then consider a used one. I personally wouldn't customize an MIJ RG beyond pickups as you're throwing $ away for aesthetics and it will have resale value less than the stock RG655.

Putting in Evolutions might actually degrade the tone though.

I have a 655 and it is a fine guitar as-is. With a proper setup, it really is a bargain. I also wouldn't mod it. You might as well buy a second hand 7V. There are a ton of mint ones out there for about the price of a 655 upgraded with Evolutions.

Yeah sure, then if later you don't like the new fretboard just chisel it out and glue in the old one right? No biggies. You have a very far-sighted judgement.

I agree with Glen and Metal Box, I wouldn't rush to change the pickups in a 655 until I played it for a while. Evos are unforgiving pickups and can be harsh depending on what you are playing through and how you play.
