What's up with these noisy 5-Way Switches?

This is my second brand new RG 920 and it too suffers from a noisy 5-Way Switch. Contact spray helped a little but it still intermittently clicks/pops when switching pickup positions. Sometimes it switches without noise but if you do it a second or third time you'll start hearing the pops/clicks when switching especially coming from position 2 to position 3. Checked the wiring and grounding to the switch and it looks ok. Very disappointing!

Re: What's up with these noisy 5-Way Switches?

Simple solution is to replace the switch with a higher quality switch.

Having to replace the 5-Way switch on brand new guitar doesn't speak much for Ibanez's QC! The best solution would be for them to incorporate a higher quality switch in this guitar in the first place!

Re: What's up with these noisy 5-Way Switches?

The SC5 is the switch they use on all non MIJ HH guitars, which is thousands. You're the first one that ever complained about it making too much noise, though all switches make some noise. So either you have a bad switch or your expectations are too high.

Ah it's one of those switches. I've got them in two guitars and never noticed anything terribly noisy. Either some slightl off soldering or you're a bit sensitive to the little noise they may make.

You want higher quality then pay for it. You bought a cheap guitar. Not the cheapest out there but bit higher up than bottom shelf.

The SC5 (2502n) switch is your only option to maintain current switching patterns. It's been in use for years and is a very reliable switch (It's been used in many higher end guitars as well) You either have a bad install or bad pots.......... I'd check both.

Knock it off man, you have 8 posts. All Cosmic was saying is that you did not buy a high end guitar, buying a high end guitar equals a lot of better things including better electronics.

First person in 17years of using this name that got its hidden meaning right. Most think it comes from the Zappa song but that is spelled Cosmik Debris. There is a line in the song "who you jiving with that cosmik debris". It also can mean bull****.

Damn! Here I thought it was from the Zappa song. I should have caught that as well.

As for the OP, are you using a high gain amp, tubescreamer, and/or DS-1 maxed out in part or all at once? It might be something else in your chain and not the switch if you happen to have this happen more than once. Just a possibility. I personally haven't had any problems with the 5 ways on non MIJ RGs.

Re: What's up with these noisy 5-Way Switches?

The 5 way switch on my MIJ 92 RT650 crackles like crazy every time I change it. Sometimes the sound goes out and I have to flip it back and forth a few times. Last time I took that guitar in for work I had the guy fix it but it started doing it again like a year later.

You need a new switch. That's what your guitar is trying to tell you.
