White guitars turning yellow?

I'm pretty set on getting an RG1451, a hardtail Prestige. Great value at 550 GBP.

I'd really like to get the one in white plaster, but will it turn yellow over time? I hate this look, even though many people seem to love it.

I read that the JEM series uses special paint to stop the guitar from turning yellow. Is this the case for other Prestige guitars?

Does anyone have any white Ibanez's from the 90s and older they could take a photo of?

Re: White guitars turning yellow?

I believe the newer finishes shouldn't yellow.

In saying that, keep it out of the sun when not playing, and it should stay white. It's the UV that causes the yellowing.

Not necessarily. It depends on what the coating is. If it's an acrylic coating or a CAB Lacquer then it shouldn't yellow. If it's a nitrocellulose lacquer then yes UV will cause it to yellow. If it's an alkyd urethane finish then lack of UV will cause it to yellow. I'm not sure about polyester coatings. It depends on if they use a urethane over it, which they often do. Figuring out exactly what is on it is the key to figuring out how to keep it looking new. It would be nice if they would publish the finish specs for these things.

I don't think you have to worry about yellowing if it has an acrylic finish... Mostly you hear about the white les pauls with nitro finishes turning yellow over time-and most people really like that aged -yellowing anyway.

Got a cream '95 RX60 (cheapo) and it has only gotten creamier as years have gone. Very yellow maple neck, too.

Re: White guitars turning yellow?

You're fine man. The UV that everyone's talking about, is a 22 year old guitar! If ANY guitar stays perfectly white after 22 years, then that thing needs to go with you to the grave.

If you like the guitar, get it. Why worry about something that will happen 15+ years down the road?

Mine yellowed a little past nicely I've only had this a few years and it was like this when I got it. I think it must be a combination of age and sunlight exposure, as the paint under the neck plate looks to have yellowed some as well. I's apart because I'm getting ready to paint it orange.

Re: White guitars turning yellow?

I have seen an 08 Jem7vw that looked almost like a darker cream. HUGE contrast from the pickguard. Not sure if it was refinished or not. I remember thinking WTF??

My 86 Roadstar II is just like those last photos. It's very creamy on the outside and pure white under the spring cover.

I think it looks cool when the finish starts to age to a nice yellowish color.
