Why does my RG550 not have a serial #?

I have a fairly old RG550. Somewhere along the way the original neck was damaged and replaced with what I thought was another RG550 neck. But I noticed today, when trying to date my guitar, that there is no serial number on the headstock - only a sticker that reads RG550. Is this a real 550 neck on my guitar? I thought all RG550s had serial numbers on the back of the headstock.

lol this is almost a waste of time.

You cannot date your guitar based on a serial number on a neck even if it were an original 550 neck. Replacement necks never have a serial because serial numbers were attached (as far as I know) to finished guitars. If it had a sticker, it would simply provide you a date/location for when the original guitar it came from, was built/assembled.

So, if it plays well, great. "Fairly old" is fine.

I had a sticker with mine that had the serial number. If you lost that I guess you will never know, unless its on the neckplate or heel.

Re: Why does my RG550 not have a serial #?

I got a fairly old 550R neck sometime last year, which had no stickers on at all. They probably just fell off from the glue failing on the stickers since it's an old neck. Just check the heel of the neck. It should say RG550, RG565 or whatever model it came off of. Mine says RG550R. That's one way to tell if it's real.

There's nothing on the neckplate. If I remove the neck, would there be anything on the inner heel of the neck itself? I'm asking this because I'd like to sell the guitar and would like to be able to put out accurate info about it.

Re: Why does my RG550 not have a serial #?

The 1987 Ibanez RGs had a black sticker with the serial number located on the back of the headstock. Unfortunately, this is the only way to date them. If the sticker fell off, as most of them do--you're S.O.L. The only thing you'll find on the neck pocket and neck heel, is a model number.

They started to stamp them after 1988 and 1989. All 1987 Ibanez used a silver sticker with black print. If your serial number isn't present, it 'most likely' is a legit 1987 RG550 neck missing the serial sticker. The neck pocket will be the sure sign and if you take some pics of it, we'll be able to confirm that it's a real Ibanez RG model stamp just by looking at the neck pocket imprint.

I'll post a few pics when I get a chance. I doubt my guitar is an '87...I remember buying it new when I was a junior in high school, which would have been 1993. The replacement neck, however, could have come from an older '87 RG550.

Are you sure it's a replacement neck?

Positive. Here's the story: I bought the guitar new sometime in '93. In '95 my mother accidentally knocked the guitar off its stand and cracked the neck. So I went and bought a used RG550 to swap the necks, since at the time that was cheaper than buying a straight-up replacement neck. The "replacement" RG550 was used and that terrible orange color. It is possible that it was an '87.

Re: Why does my RG550 not have a serial #?

Well, I can tell you that 93 had an AANJ neck joint. From 1987 until 1992 were the square heel neck joint, so perhaps you had a 92 and the replacement neck was from an earlier year. If you are refering to carotene orange (looks like an orange popcicle) then it was a 1987. It could also be Five Alarm Red. These were made in 1989 for the five alarm red (darker orange). Both colors were steller!

Another question, if you did have carotene orange, then the headstock was black, white white Ibanez swoosh logo, rosewood fretboard, dot inlays. The 89 Five alarm red would have been sharkstooth inlays, matching headstock, which is a RG570DX, not an RG550.

Your guitar, pickguard or not? If yes, then RG550. Pics would help determine all that too..

Actually it was 1994 when the neck joints changed. Although some might have been made in late 1993, in preparation for the new 1994 catalogue models.

Re: Why does my RG550 not have a serial #?

the silver stickers were only 87 models, after that was clear stickers with white writing...the serial number stickers and the model stickers were always seperate..and they don't just fall off, it was removed...those stickers are STUCK!..and it doesn't matter if the model sticker is on or off, it's either an RG550 or it isn't...dating it will require the serial number though..F for Fujin(however you spell it) factory..and the first number is the last in the year..7 for 87...9 for 89...0 for 90...and so on, till changed in the late 90's.
